The Unique Trap and Skeet

By Lindsey Spina Unigo Campus Rep at Delaware Basketball, baseball, synchronized skating and water polo.  These are just four out of 29 club sports offered at the University of Delaware.  The most unique of them all has to be Trap and Skeet. Trap and Skeet are actually two different sports, but in a nutshell, they involve participants firing shotguns at small clay disks.  A perfect score is 25. Senior Kevin Waegerle joined the UD club team when it was formed in spring 2008.  Though the team is young, they have already competed in multiple competitions. “In early October, we participated in Virginia Tech’s Hokie Invitational,” Waegerle said.  “We also drove up to West Point and shot against them and the University of Connecticut.  We got second place in both competitions.” He said next semester they plan to compete in more events. “We plan on going to the ACUI Intercollegiate Clay Targets Championship in San Antonio,” Waegerle said.  “All the college teams in the U.S. meet there to compete for the national title.” The club practices twice a week at the Wilmington Trapping Association, which is about 15 minutes off-campus. Senior Liz Clark said Trap and Skeet is the most unique sport because anyone can do it. “You can always be competing against yourself, teammates and other teams,” Clark said.  “You can always improve, and it’s always especially exciting to see younger people participate in it.” “I think the thing that stands out about this sport for me is the noise,” Waegerle said.  “We’re louder than anyone else – there’s a bad joke for you.”
