I know you have probably seen a slew of back-to-school shopping lists that include every little item you may (or may not) need for your dorm room, but forget about decorations and school supplies because you won’t need most of the suggested items on those lists. In fact, when it comes to decorating your dorm room, I suggest a visit to Pinterest to see some cool room gadgets for your dorm. There you will find a ton of cheap and easy do-it-yourself projects that will make your door room feel like home. Or, you could be like several guys I know and decorate your walls with beer boxes and bottle caps, though I don’t suggest this unless you live off campus. And even then, you could get slapped with a hefty fee when you move out.
When it comes to shopping to look for cool room gadgets, remember that space is limited. You’ll want to focus on items that you’ll use frequently or will add significant harmony to your chaotic college life. That is why these five products make my dorm room shopping list.
1. DormDoc
Even if you’ve lead a pretty healthy life, you’re bound to get sick in college. It’s inevitable. Unfortunately, your mom won’t be there to comfort or care for you — but this is the next best thing. It includes an easy-to-use, color-coded guide to identify your symptoms, as well as the over-the-counter medication to combat them. If you don’t want to pay the price, ask mom to create something similar for you.
2. Aquarium
If you have to leave your pets behind, this is the next best thing. It doesn’t require any maintenance and you won’t get stung. It will, however, this will be a cool room gadget in your dorm and help calm your nerves while studying for that big exam. It changes to five different colors and plugs into any AC outlet.
3. Keurig Brewing System
Forget paying $4, $5, or even more for a cup of coffee. Buy the Keurig K40 Elite, and you’ll have a hot cup in your hands in less than 60 seconds anytime you want one. You could even earn a little cash by opening up your door and offering students a cup for about $2 each. They save money. You earn money. It’s a win-win for everyone! Another perk…it also makes tea and hot chocolate.
4. Waffle Maker
Even if you don’t like waffles, buy a waffle maker. Why? You can use it to make grilled cheese sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, hash browns, and even quesadillas. It’s also great for making quick desserts, like chocolate chip waffles. Waffle makers are also cheap to purchase and easy to clean.
5. Hot Pot
Some of the cheapest food you can buy as a college student is Ramen noodles, soup, and oatmeal. What do they all have in common? They need hot water. Buy a microwave! If you have this cool room gadget in your dorm room, you could use it, but this hot pot from Proctor Silex is so much easier. It heats up faster than a microwave and is adjustable, so you won’t burn your tongue. At under $20, it’s a great bargain.
