They are quite challenging.

The academic programs are the most influential. Most class sizes are small enough that professors get to know you as a student. This includes learning your name and also getting to know your personality and interests. I enjoy all of my classes for this reason. It is easy to ask questions or make comments, get in touch with professors and know the students around you. I am an education major and am in the education program. It is a new and exciting experience. So far, while attending WSU, I have not heard any negative comments about professors or programs.

Class sizes at Winona are just right. English and speech classes and smaller classes have around 20-30 students in them. Lecture halls have only 150 students in them. It is the perfect size. Your professors know your name if you go into their office hours and get to know them. My favorite class is Anatomy and Physiology. It is a very hard class but it is very rewarding to understand all about your own body. The nursing program here is very competitive so you always want to make sure you are trying your hardest and doing your best! Class participation is very common because everyone is here for the same reason. We all pay to go to class so we all want the most out of our education. I am a pre-nursing major here at Winona State and I work very hard to get good grades and keep all A's.

The academics are great here at WSU. The professors are always willing to help and the class sizes are nice and small. You can get a free tutor for any subject at the library and some classes even offer study sessions taught by a upperclassmen. I study around two to three hours daily outside of my classes sometimes more. Participation in class really depends if the class is a lecture or more hands on. The majority of my professors know my name which I love. I don't think student are necessarily competitive with each other for grades but they are with themselves. Clubs and other activities give students more of an opportunity to partake in intellectual conversations. My favorite class is actually accounting because my professor is funny and the class goes by fast because we learn so much. My least favorite class is English because it is two hours long and the subject isn't my best. My major is marketing and the business department has been very helpful with helping me stay on track and decide what classes i should be taking. I do no spend time with my professors unless I go visit them during their office hour which I seldom need to do. I think education here is definitely geared toward getting a job after graduation, and Winona has pretty high placement for their graduates!

I am a cell and molecular biology major for pre-dentistry and I picked up a biochemistry minor, as well, so I can only speak for the department which I have taken classes in. I love the time between classes when everyone is commuting from one class to the next. I'm always so excited to hear bits and pieces or people talking about classes and school and tests and things that they learned that day. It's refreshing compared to high school passing time where people are just mindlessly socializing.
Students within my major are definitely competitive-they need to be! We're all pre-med, pre-dent, etc. I guess 'competitive' isn't the best word...it has a negative connotation. What I mean is that everyone works very hard and tries to have a competitive GPA, but everyone gets along and helps each other out.
I would have to say my most and least favorite classes are completely dependent on the professors. I love my biochemistry class with Dr. Lee because she is just an awesome lady and professor. She REALLY wants everyone to learn and will help you out as much as you need. She does activities such as quizzes and labs during the class time so she is right there if you have any questions. This way, if you can't make it to any of her office hours, you still have time almost everyday where you are working on your school work while she is around to help. She's awesome.
My least favorite class was cell biology lab. My professor was really bad-everyone got A's and B's in the end but no one learned a thing. The highest actual grade on any given assignment, lab or test was a D, but he just made the total out of the highest grade in the class so everyone had a high percentage. Luckily I learned some of the same lab techniques in my biochemistry class to compensate!
I think learning here is geared toward general knowledge as well as getting a job. They set up a curriculum for what everyone needs, but we also take the general classes such as english, speech, etc, and many electives are offered for personal interests such as astrology.

All the professors are really good, they are also your friends and glad to help you.
