University of Wyoming Top Questions

Wyoming is a really great school. Academically it has very strong programs and the accreditations necessary. It has a beautiful but small campus in a small college town. If you're looking for a big city atmosphere, the University of Wyoming is definitely not the place to go. The students at the school have their fair share of parties, but many of the people that come to the University come because of the really great deal on tuition and room and board, or for the many outdoor opportunities that the school has to offer. Fifteen minutes east is Vedavoo, a great hiking and rock climbing spot; thirty minutes west are the Snowy Range Mountains, Centennial and some great scenic spots for those who enjoy winter sports, fishing, hiking and much more. If you feel like taking a weekend trip, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Saratoga Hot Springs, the Grand Tetons, and the Big Horn Mountains are only a relatively short drive away. My favorite thing about the school is the variety of activities it has to offer that you can't get out on the east coast, the fun old west culture that you get to see so often, and the country swing dances that happen in Laramie all the time. As much as I love these things you do find the negative aspects of the campus, I mean no college or university is perfect. A lot of times instead of 6 degrees of separation you find only 2 or 3. Many people that go to school at the University of Wyoming are from the area and come to school with an already settled group of friends. Sometimes it's hard to make friends when no one else is looking for them. I've made some great friends but you have to make sure to go out there and be social. Another thing I've learned is that Wyoming is usually at least 10 or 20 years behind the rest of the country in social mannerisms. Now don't get me wrong the chivalry shown is great, but sometimes people aren't so politically correct or accepting. This is definitely not the case for everyone, it just is a little more noticeable in a place like Wyoming, compared to the hub of liberals living in Massachusetts. The school has a lot of great things going for it, but i'd say the biggest student complaint would be the lack of things to do that aren't outdoor related, but there has been a lot of construction and new businesses coming in this past year, so we'll see if that changes a little!

Wyoming may seem like a boring place, if you have never been here. You may not even know where it is, WE ARE NOT IN COLORADO. WE are the other square state, just north of CO. I am originally from the east coast so if you love the ocean like i do then yes things will be lacking but besides that its a pretty great place to live. Unlike other places we do a lot of outdoors things. Rock climbing, snowshoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, 4 wheeling, camping, bouldering, like i said, lots of outdoor things. If you have never breathed fresh air than come on up. As a state, WY is far above the water line with concern to elevation, we also have the freshest air. If you are a runner, skier, or all around sportman,then you really want to train here, it will expand your lung capacity. The only things that i would change would be exactly how the winter is, the wind, and the colors, the shades of brown and beige may work for some but i like a litte green here and there that is not from an Evergreen tree.

When I tell people I go to Wyoming they make a disgusted face and ask why the hell? And I tell them because its cheap. And that there is actually some cool things about wyoming. Mostly for me is its location to awesome snowboarding. Steamboat is only hours away and with the BIG 6 Pack through the university its not that expensive.

The best thing about UW is the size. Nearly all of my teachers know me on a first name basis, yet there are still enough students to go to a party and have no idea who anyone is.

I think one of the best things about UW is that there is something for everyone. Sometimes you have to look a little harder to find it, but its there. UW (like any college) is what you make of it. If you want it to suck going to. But if you want your college career to rock, it will.

Okay, so the school is cool and I really like all the facilities and conveniences and all that jazz, but the wind here is so terrible that it makes me want to kill myself sometimes (haha, not really, but it's pretty bad). I like the town of Laramie because it's just the right size for my liking and is very "hip" and "college-y." It has some cool stores and coffee shops, and it has a Safeway, which is badass. As for school pride and all that, I'm pretty sure it's through the roof. I'm really not into football and cowboys and things of that sort, so I'm not exactly like "Go Pokes! Whoop whoop!" but everyone else is, so I guess that's good. Ummm...I spend a lot of time at the gym and in the Fine Arts building (Art major, what do you expect). But yeah, I'm pretty content with everything except for the shitty weather.

wyoming has great scenery. if i could, i would stop the wind from blowing. the school is a good size. business classes are typically about 30 students. i spend most of my time on campus in class. its best to be indoors during winter. there are a lot of new building being built right now (08) that should be completed in a few years. school pride is really strong. the football games always have good attendance and also our girls basketball team kicks ass. parking is the biggest complaint from all students. there really is only one big parking lot and you must ride a bus to the campus from it. if you park closer to campus it's in a pay lot where you pay 50 cents an hour but this lot is really small and you have to get there early to find a spot.

I don't think that I would change anything about UW. I love it here, even when I get weird looks when I say that I am going to school there, just because NY is so far away from it. The atmosphere is great although it is almost always cold. It is not taken for granted though when the sun comes out, you see so many more people outside enjoying it. A college town is what Laramie is to me. When the school year is over it becomes more quiet so I hear, and on the weekends you can tell that the students are out because campus is deserted. I think that the administration does a great job keeping the students updated on campus activieties and construction and all sorts of opprotunities, many of them are free. We get emails at least once a week updating the students. I think that UW has a good amount of campus pride. We do well not only in academics but in extracuricular activities and sports. The one thing that is most complained about is the fast changing weather, however we put on our layers and walk to school and around campus with the same attitudes as when the sun shines- sort of. We at least still go to class. I think that I will always remember the welcoming feeling that comes when a new semester starts, there is a new beginning-like feeling. An opprotunity is again opened to become a better student and get more involved. The University of Wyoming was my first choice and still is.

The wide open spaces and everyone's generosity is by far my favorite part about our state. I would bring more people here and have at least one big city. This place is too small and everyone seems to get sucked back into the state. I love the size of our university. I hope it stays this sixe so we can eventually get another university in the state. Because Laramie is so small the town is basically the campus so everyone is always at the union, on Greek Row or buzzing around downtown in Laramie. We are very lucky to have such a strong faculty and administration here at UW. They are all here truly for the students. This is evident because they know everyone's names and make you feel like people. I think the biggest controversy on campus is parking and pedestrian safety is our biggest challenge and concern. Unfortunately we have little to no school spirit. I think my high school has more spirit. This is because everyone who attends here are on scholarships and Wyoming was not their first choice. Our parents have so much pride. Wyoming is just very small and everyone here has a small town mentality. This makes us a little unusual. The one experience I will always remember is the lasting friendships I have made here. I am a better person because of this University and all that it has offered me. I think parking again is the biggest complaint.

I love the University of Wyoming. This is the right place for me to be in my life right now. UW is big enough that it has a wide range of classes and majors, but has the feel of a small college. Laramie is a nice little college town; although most people go to Ft. Collins if they want to do something interesting. I really like it here, but I don't think it is a good fit for everyone, particularly if you are looking for a 'big city' atmosphere.
