University of Mary Washington Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Micah

The most popular groups on campus are the athletes. In the freshman dorms, students always leave their doors upon, but once you are in an upperclass dorm, expect to meet few people. Females outnumber the men, so guys who are jerk still get girls. I met my closest friends through living with them and playing sports with them. Students don't really participate in events on campus unless a free t-shirt is involved. The University does not recognize social frats or sororities. We have a fake frat off-campus that most students hate. Just last school year, the University recognized a co-ed frat, but that is about all they will tolerate. People party all the time at UMW. There is usually a coupel big parties on the weekends, but you end up seeing the same people at them every week. Students drink a lot, because there isn't much else to do.

Students Helping Honduras eats the campus. End of story. It's a great organisation, don't get me wrong. Just expect to hear from them EVERY DAY. As far as activities go, the parties are lame and not worth it. A lot of them end up busted. There's no official greek life, which I think is wonderful. If you don't like to drink, there's not much to do - just hang out with friends, basically.

Mary Washington is a very academically focused university; needless to say that a "social life" is near nonexistent on campus. One can certainly find things to do off campus any given day of the week, whether it be going into Downtown Fredericksburg, or to an off campus party, but as far as on campus activities are concerned there is little to do.

the one thing i really liked about mary wash that might turn some people off is that there are no frats or sororities. i feel like that made campus a lot more all inclusive and less click-y. most people then assume that there is nothing to do on the weekends which isn't necessarily true. while there are very few parties on campus, there are plenty in the surrounding neighborhoods and at the mary wash apartment complex which is across the street. there are also a lot of clubs, which i wasn't really into, but my friends were all part of clubs. despite the fact that mary wash is D-III, there are sports to play, they just take a back-seat to academics, which fit my priorities better. there are also a lot of club teams for pretty much every sport you can think of. i loved cheap seats where movies fresh out of the theaters would come to campus and play on the big screen for admission of only a $1.

For whatever reason, there is not much of a social life at UMW. However, that isn't to say that the school and/or groups within the school have not worked to change that. The school is frequently host to guest speakers, bands/performers. There are often festivals or fairs hosted by resident student groups on campus. I think the fact that most students are academically centered lends itself to a lack of a "party scene".

There is not much to the social life of a UMW student. There really isnt anything to do on campus on the weekends other than to drink. And even then you better be quite stealthy because if they even suspect you you will be harassed nonstop. If you go to one of the three partys off campus on weekends if there are more than 40 people there it will get busted by the cops.Because there are so many girls...girls end up dating down from their normal capacity. The guys also think they can treat the girls like trash because if the girl doesnt do something they dont like or won't put out they move on to the other 10 girls fighting for their attention. They are no real frats just a fake one that is pretty lame.

We have a pretty decent sized amount of club sports and intramural sports. There's no football team, but there is club rugby. Fun things to do off campus are: wander around downtown, visit the nearby park, go to Central Park and shop, play mini golf, visit the battlefield.

Always something going on with one club or another I strongly suggest getting involved in the clubs there is something for everyone and it offers a great opportunity to make friends and gain valuable leadership and organizational experience. If you can not find a club you like MAKE one OSACS is really for the students and they will help you.

No football team, alot of alcohol abuse! Woohoo
