University of Cincinnati-Main Campus Top Questions

As a Resident Adviser in the Dorm halls for two years now I have come to realize that students experience at UC is whatever they want to make it. Students can live a very social life, they can get involved in plenty of service organizations, they can do intramural sports, they can be involved in religious organizations, or they could spend their time in downtown Cincinnati seeing the city life. It all just depends on how you apply yourself. As someone who came from a small town I was ready for a new experience. I definitely got that experience at UC---it was a great new challenge. I had to adjust, go with the flow, and stay organized in order to stay on top of things. One thing I would change is the cold winter weather. Winter can be fun when you are a kid, but for the most part when you live in a dorm room you along with everyone else tends to get cabin fever. Another thing I would change is how much of a commuter school UC is. Though there are over 40,000 students at the UC main campus, only 4,000 students live on campus. Furthermore, many students commute in vehicles to get to campus. This can make weekend activities less exciting than if more students was down here near or on campus full time. I spend lots of my time in the dorm which I am a RA in. Furthermore, I also spend lots of time with The Navigators. This is a on campus Christian based organization. Within the organization I am a freshmen small groups leader, on the Navs Leadership team, and a avid participant in weekend activities, and service events.

Overall, I think the University of Cincinnati is a good school. The best thing about the school would be the school spirit that everyone has. You generally don't run into anyone that doesn't have some pride in being a UC student. The one thing I might change about UC is the food courts, I'd like if they'd have healthier foods or change the way they use "swipes." The size of the school is perfect though. All the buildings are close together and there aren't any major roads running through it making it just for students only. When people tell me that they go to UC, I get excited because that's where I go as well. If they are going for a different major than me, I'm able to learn more about the school through them. Most of my time on campus is spent at the library. The main library is big enough that you can find your own area to study and there are other smaller libraries throughout the campus. The only issue that I have with UC actually isn't the school itself, but the area around the school. If you go off campus, you're not in a safe area, but if you're on campus, they make sure that you feel safe. Living off campus without a car is difficult sometimes during the winter or when it gets dark out, but they have enough shuttles running around that you generally don't have to worry about that. There are a lot of fun little traditions that you learn year by year and the football and basketball games are always tons of fun and there are always so many students showing their support.

As a student at UC, I Love it! Though it is a big school, there is a place for everyone to fit in! The best thing about UC is the Bearcat spirit that reigns on UC's campus. UC is a part of an urban community, so if you like being in the city, this is definitely the place for you. There is somewhat of a "college-town" feel on campus but 5 minutes away is beautiful downtown Cincinnati. UC's administrative staff as well as all of the professors are always helpful and always striving for the best for their students. There are so many amenities on campus that have been created just for students. UC definitely cares about their students. The only controversies is the minimal crime that occurs in the Clifton area, but students are always notified of what is going on and there is a specific UC police force on campus. Students can definitely know that they are safe on UC's campus.

The best thing about our school is the diverse culture. There are many cultural clubs, international students and academic personnel. I would probably change the way the other campuses are being treated; branch of University of Cincinnati: Blue Ash College (aka Raymond Walters College) is being treated like the step child of the family. The size of our school is not too bad. I would have liked to have more space for fun activities though. People don't seemed to be surprised or impressed all the time although it does happen, but they still think that I go to a good school. I mostly spend my time in College of Business, Starbucks or the gym to get rid of the fat I consume from starbucks. College town Administration has a lot more to accomplish, especially with the office of study abroad and financial aid office... I am not aware of the controversy on campus. Yes, we do have school pride. Social activities, support from the clubs and advisors as well as admins. And we cant forget the Bearcats!! Nothing unusual, but diversity is unique about our school.. I will always remember how the admissions office helped me enroll on my first year. I was a foreign student, and never had any education in US. After that, within that year, I got into Dean's list, NSCS, great feedback from my professors, and much more. I will never forget the way that I was given a chance and opportunity to show my potential in school as a foreign student. Most frequent complaints that I've heard of was the lack of quality and technical service provided by the financial aid office staff.

I like UC a lot. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and meet new, interesting people. The best way to get the most out of your experience here is to get involved; go to the free events, pay attention to flyers, and stop in on student group meetings that you may be interested in. It is worth it! The BEST thing about UC is the fact that it is an Urban Campus. I love heading downtown on the weekends to go to my favorite bar, a cool restaurant, or just hang out by the river. UC provides shuttles to the Bengals and Reds games and to Mt. Adams (one of the weekend hot spots). Our campus is nice and compact so that nothing is too far of a walk, but also located so close to Downtown Cincinnati that you can get the best of two worlds. One complaint that I have with the University is that the administration sometimes seems to value some things higher than the students. As a member of several clubs at UC, we constantly run into road blocks that simply should not be an issue for a school group that is only working for the advancement of their school and their own college experiences.

Since my very first day here I've felt at home. I'm in DAAP, the school of Design, Architecture, Arts, and Planning, and the program I'm in is extremely challenging, but nearly every professor I have is amazing, and I'm learning a lot. I'm from Massachusetts and very few people from my area really consider UC, but the Industrial Design program that I'm in was just ranked #1 in the nation by DesignIntelligence, so I'm very excited to be in this acclaimed program. I haven't dealt much with the school administration, but the one thing I've noticed is that the whole school feels a bit bureaucratic. The only other issue is that though it is a small, compact campus (I walk from my dorm on one corner to a building on the opposite corner every day, and it typically takes less than 15 minutes), it is very hilly - from the Tangeman University Center in the middle of campus to MarketPointe Dining Hall is about a 50 to 100 foot climb uphill over a quarter mile plus. By the end of the first year, you'll be in shape.

UC is a large school, but because of the condensed campus, it doesn't feel that way. I'm a current graduate student who earned his undergraduate degree at UC back in the 80's. The campus has changed remarkably since then, and so has the way UC is run. I feel The University of Cincinnati is definitely on the upswing.
