University of Arkansas Top Questions

What are the academics like at University of Arkansas?

The classes are so big and the classes that are small your teacher still doesn't care enough to learn your name. But it doesn't really matter because I don't care enough to learn their name. I just try to get the best grade I can. I don't like how everything is all tests. Not everyone is a good test taker, so I don't think its fair.

Being a Theater major I have very small classes and a lot of one on one with the teachers and I love it. I really feel like the professors are there whenever you need them and always ready to help out. Even in my gen ed classes I feel like they are pretty interesting and you can always email your professors about problems. Of course most of them don't know your name but if you make an effort they will. And I have no doubt that I won't have a problem getting a decent job after graduation.

At the Walton College of Business we have many close knit groups of students. Most professors know your name if it isn't an auditorium class. Most WCOB classes are lectures with slides. The communications classes I have taken are much more hands on. Every teacher learned my name and they were a lot more interactive and fun.

The academics at Arkansas are very challenging, but will ultimately teach you everything you need to know. With a wide range of class sizes the experience in every class will be different. Professors truely care about your education and love meeting and getting to know their students.

There are a lot of opportunities to succeed at Arkansas! A great variety of classes.

Some professors know my name. usually the ones from smaller classes do. My favorite teacher is Larry Aslin. he is with the UofA Speech Hearing Clinic. He is an awesome teacher! he makes class fun because he is so animated. It's definitely easy to go to his class when it's at 9:30. I try to participate in class because I know I am more likely to get bumped up a grade if I am borderline if the teacher recognizes that I attend class and participate.

The best classes are the ones the teacher's are excited about teaching, esp. if you like the subject. For instance, my first day of Developmental Psych, my teacher told us that she had fought to teach that class, despite the hated early hour, and it was her focus when studying psych. But not all teachers are that forward. Most are passionate about the class they teach, though. Classes tend to be bigger, so unless you make an effort to know the teacher, they won't know you outside of class. The T.A.s usually get to know you, though. Arkansas students aren't dumb, there are intellectual conversations outside of class, it just depends on who you're talking to. Students aren't really competitive, though. No time is spent outside of class w/ a professor, unless it's to make up a test. The math department here is absolutely terrible. The majority of the classes are done on the computer, and the system for it is pretty bad.

Class size is sometimes to big which makes it hard to get to know the teachers. Also that the teachers seem less eager to help students out when class size is larger.

Carly

I know all of my professor's name and they have all worked hard to try and learn mine. My favorite class right now is sociology. I'm very interested in this subject and i really like my professor. Class participatioin usually isn't that common. Most people never really want to speak up if they have a question.

Whitney

Class participation isn't as common as I thought it would be, but that may just be because these are mostly core classes and not many people are passionate about them as they would be in a class about their field of study. I think that it's crazy that I took a class and my last test was solely concerned with different types of primates (Bio. Antrho.).
