The years spent at The University of Texas at El Paso have helped me understand that I was wrong to doubt my questions about life. The motiviation and criticism that I recieved was a blessing, and safe to say now, that all the money and loans that have transformed into a Great Wall of Debt, somehow feels all well worth it now. Unquestionable really, to find out that the skills and knowledge that you have are real, tangible, and changeable; which is the real reason why people should seek higher education. If you allow yourself to let go of some of the "standard education" that public schools often hammer in, you realize that theoritically, a life in education is endless and you are the only one who can question and, in the end, come up with your own answers. That defines college for me. I will also work for my MFA in Creative Writing at another university, but will never forget with I learned at UTEP. I am a student for life.

Even though El Paso is my hometown and the city I grew up in, I began my college career at The University of Arizona. The reason I am applying for this scholarship is because I would like to go back to the U of A but I need help in order to pay off a very large debt. I am very grateful to UTEP for allowing me to register when U of A would not let me, and my experience at UTEP has been very valuable. My general college experience has taught me better time management and how to become a more responsible person overall. It has also been beneficial to me because it has kept me active. In college you do not have much time, if any at all to just sit around; there is always something to do. Being an Education major, college has also inspired me to give back to the community by volunteering at local elementary schools, and I love doing it. Another thing I have got out of college: many more friends; you are always meeting new people. I am looking forward to my last college years, but I cannot do it without your help!

I am a current student in the University of Texas of El Paso and I am mexican , so I have been studying here for almost three years after passed alls of my life in Mexico so, I can diferentiate both systems. In this nation there are a lot of Universities but UTEP is the best option for anybody that wants to succed in life , this because in the campus yo have anything you need starting with the best environment, prepared Professors, obviously a library which tends to be full on finals and midterms week, any kind of food restaurants and one of the most important things in these days which is nutrition so there is a fabulous gym which can make all student's lifes healthier which is basic because in order to be good emotionally we need to be good also physically.

Even though college is hard, scary and very stressful, I would be glad to do it all over again. The experience one gets from attending a university is invaluable. I learned to appreciate the value of hard work by going to school and have a job. Staying up late to study teaches you to appreciate everything you have and will have in the future. I also discovered that I enjoy reading books, especially history literature. When young, you tend to take everything for granted because all your wants and needs are provided to you at no cost. Reality hit me pretty hard after I graduated high school. Life demands that you work for everything you request and if you want something better, guess what, you have to double your efforts. Attending UTEP has taught me to appreciate what I have, and not because I struggled but by talking with other students and realizing that everybody has struggles, and in some cases much harder.

El Paso, Texas is one of the nation's most impoverished and growing cities. I grew up in a ghetto called El Segundo Barrio, where I longed for a better life, and realized it would only be possible through a good education. At the age of 14 I enrolled in a high school which allowed me to attend communitty college simultaneously. My college experience was definitely not the usual type, as I was also taking high school courses, and later took a part time job at a fast food restaurant to pay for my art supplies. I am currently working on my Bachelors degree in Graphic Design and Painting, and I also just graduated from high school. My college years have been truly valuable, as they helped me mature faster, and have aided me through my journey of self discovery. I will continue to work hard not only in my college classes, but in life, as only that way will I achieve my dream of doing what I love for a living.

I have always been very presistent but since I have enrolled in college I have really put it to use. I have become alot more responsible for myself and taken a personal interest in what is going on with my academics instead of just assuming everything is going how I want it to and being blind sided. I have learned to channel my energy and manage my time alot better than at any other point in my life even though I maintained a job all four years of high school. I have had some amazing instructors so far that have enlightend me on many levels. Understanding the subjects, becoming more resposible, and recognizing my goals and what I need to get there has really boosted my confidence and motivated me more to keep working towards my dream.

After my parents divorced my brother, mother, and I had lost our house and had no place to live in. My aunt already caring for her five children, allowed us to stay at her home in the interim until we were able to pick ourselves up again. I was attending high school during this time and my main priority was to graduate from high school to attend college in hopes of attaining a promising career. During my first year at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. This is when I became involved with the university and joined the Medical Professions Institute (MPI). Through volunteering with this organization, I became increasingly interested in this profession and learned that working in the health field whether a nurse or doctor can be fulfilling. Recently, I gained acceptance into the fast track program of nursing at UTEP and by the end of May I will become a future nurse of this diverse and disadvantaged population. The four years that I was able to spend at this university are valuable and have brought me to where I am today.

Before I began my post highschool education I was very niave and saw the world in more simplistic terms. I thought the only benefit of an education was the diploma I would recieve upon my graduation. However several truly brilliant teachers have made me appreciate academia for the understanding into the world it can provide. Great writers such as Joyce or Berriault may write works of fiction, but the theme at the heart of these works deals with real emotions and worldly situations that can only be seen through examining them analytically, which is something I wasn't able to do when I had shut out education. This broader view of the world coupled with the responsibilities of an adult life have helped me rededicate myself to the intellectual pilgrimage that is learning in hopes that I will one day be able to have a modest career and a modest life.

What I have gotten out of my college experience is hope. Hope for my future, and hope for my entire family. This generation, in my family has had the highest amount of family members in college. Higher education gives people the ability to pull themselves up in life. Even with the economy being so bad, people with a higher level of education are more likely to keep their jobs.
