Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) isn't the best college out there, but I cannot recommend it enough. The faculty and students are diverse, and can be hit or miss, like at any college. However, most colleges will charge you an arm and a leg for courses that will be the same at SMCC. You can go bankrupt majoring in something you aren't even sure you want to do for the rest of your life at any college, but you can explore your interests at at a low cost at SMCC. I dropped out of the University of Maine at Orono after wasting thousands of dollars in a major I hated. When I transferred to SMCC, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After having the opportunity to explore classes in the arts and sciences through the Liberal Studies program, I rediscovered biology. Now that I've graduated, I'm transferring to the University of New England to major in biochemistry, and I couldn't be happier. Overall, don't write off SMCC just because it's a community college. Let it be a stepping stone in your academic career, and allow yourself the chance to explore your interests affordably. It's no Harvard, but it's a smart move for your finances and future.

Southern Maine Community College allows for students to receive free education so that they have an equal opportunity as the person who does not have to worry about spending money on things they do not need. Although the school does not have the fancy new gear as a larger school, It provides the same resources and has smaller class sizes which allows for educational questions and learning.

This is a really good school that accommodates and accepts people of all ages. It’s mainly a commuter school so the community isn’t tightly knit but I’d say the student life is decent. I personally would never live in these dorms, they’re just too small for my liking. The food from the cafeteria is decent, but the campus cafe has horrible food. The campus itself is beautiful, being right on the coast, although it needs to be better maintained as weeds will soon take over certain areas. Overall, this is a great school for people looking to get their associates or take a couple classes for a great price.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I was allowed to go back in time and speak to my self as a high school senior I would advise my self to make more of an effort of applying for scholarships, I only recieved one scholarship and this caused my mother to have to work even harder so that I could afford my tuition and etc..

  4. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

That it is to fast paste and classes demand to much work from the students but that is probley the same with every school. The school is not that bad though. The wrost thing about the school would have to be the parking lot. The parking lot could use just a little help. I know it takes money, but all of the pot holes cost students money in repairs and we are already paying for school.

  6. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The addmissions department is very honest about the waiting period to get into the nursing program. I know that the program is full and not accepting students until fall of 2012. It helps to not play a guessing game when applying as to when I will get accepted and about how long it will take.

  8. What kind of person should attend this school?

What makes this school so wonderful is its complete diversity; there is not one type of person that could represent SMCC. I have classes with people from many different backrounds and beliefs, also a variety of ages. The type of person who would get the most of this school is someone who is willing to work hard to recieve a great education. This school allows a shy person to emerge by becoming involved in an array of opportunites. A person can take the initiative to organize any club or event they wish and are provided the support they would need.

  9. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

My school is best known for it's capability to inspire the kids that fell through the cracks in high school. It's teachers are known for switching students' mindset from having to do the work for someone else to wanting to do the work for themselves. It's known for the ocean it resides next to and how relaxing it is to get out of a tough class and take a walk on the beach. Lastly it's known for the diverse student and teacher backgrounds and how much of an influence it has in the classroom.

  10. What's unique about your campus?

Besides the price, the location and the prospective future it provides, the best thing about my school is the devotion in the eyes of the staff. The kind of stare, glance or blink that lets you know that you're not just a number. The staff at SMCC is an accumulation of people that care if those who can barely pay for college actually go. It makes all the difference when something goes wrong and you are about to quit when the person trying to help actually cares if you see it through. They won't let you give up.
