  3. Describe the students at your school.

The Shimer community is very relaxed. People who are uptight or obsessed with status don't do well here. Everybody interacts, everybody talks with everybody; you don't have much choice. :-) People at Shimer tend to be very politically involved, but they come from all sorts of perspectives; liberals and conservatives and anarchists and socialists all get along at Shimer, though they may have some heated discussions.

  6. What are the academics like at your school?

Everyone is on a first-name basis at Shimer -- students, teachers, staff, even the president. And by the end of your first semester, you'll know all of their names and everyone will know yours. The community is as tight-knit and welcoming as you could imagine, and it really helps to soften the strain that the uncompromising academics would otherwise create.

  7. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

There are not a lot of extracurricular activities within Shimer itself, though there are lots of opportunities for that sort of thing around the IIT campus. Theater is a big deal, and so is community governance (not just "student government" -- at Shimer, students have a real say in the running of the school). There are a couple of really big parties each semester, and lots of small parties happening all the time. There are NO frats or sororities at Shimer -- for one thing, we're too small, and for another thing it's just not the Shimer way.

  9. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The best thing about Shimer are the conversations. Shimer is a very small community, and it can be claustrophobic at times. Fortunately, in the new setting in Chicago, this is less of a concern.

  10. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Hello, me. I know you're worried about going to college so far from home. It's a big change for you, and you're not good with changes. You're scared that you'll much something up and won't be able to make any friends or that you won't do well academically because Shimer is not what you're used to and it's going to be hard. Trust me. It will be. But don't worry so much. Be yourself. Work hard and do your best. You're going to do everything right. Hard to believe now, I know, but you're going to make a good impression on people as long as you don't hide yourself away. You'll do okay in class as long as you honestly try. And you already plan on doing both those things, so you're practically set. College is going to be the turning point for you. Don't let your fears hold you back. Embrace the change, make new friends, and excel. You can do it. And you will. So don't worry so much, okay?

  11. What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about my school is that it isn't like other schools. We're a small, tight-knit community with an intensive discussion and Great Books-based curriculum. The students here honestly want to learn, and in times of crisis, will band together. You can't separate the community from the academics here, and because of this, it's important to everyone that our college is run democratically. We all have a say in what happens because it's just as important to each of us. We're not here just to learn: we're here to grow.
