Quinnipiac University Top Questions

I LOVE Quinnipiac and being here for the past four years. It is exactly the right size for me - I know a lot of people and my teachers all know who I am but I do not see the exact same people everyday and there is always a good oportunity to meet knew people. When I was a senior in high school telling people where I was going nobody knew where it was - over the past few years Quinnipiac has made some amazing advances and now it is hard to find someone in the New England area who has not heard about Quinnipiac or at least the Quinnipiac Poll. I love our library! It is so gorgeous and comfortable; every staff member has always been more than willing to help me with my projects. There are so many things I will never forget - most of them were spontaneous events which happened with my roommates and friends. In my opinion people will always find something to complain about. When at a school it is natural to complain about the administration and their decisions. However, when I look at the progress and improvements that have been made at the school in just the four short years since I was a freshman a lot of credit must be given to the administration.

The best thing about Quinnipiac is, for me, the Communications department. One thing I would change... I would make this school more music oriented, and also more diverse. I think QU is just the right size. I still go out and meet QU students for the first time! and I am graduating in December! A lot of people ask me to repeat myself because it is such a hard name to pronounce but once they understand they automatically ask "Communications or PT?" Now that all my friends are upper class men I spend most of my time in Hill/Village. During classes I am mostly in Tator this year. QU's Administration?? well I love all the profs I have, Lahey is another story. As a communications and print journalism major, he is making it very hard to really like him right now considering he is diminishing my major. That I know of the biggest controversies on QU are the diversity and the Lahey SOC relationship. There is more school pride than in the past, especially now that we have the new arena. THAT PLACE IS AWESOME! I think it is unusual that transfers are put in Whitney Village, they are new students just like freshman but you would never imagine freshman living there. Also it stinks seniors dont have housing. One experience I will ALWAYS remember is my semester in Rome. Yes I was not at Quinnipiac but I went their through QU! student complaints - Not enough parking, food is to expensive, not enough housing.

The best thing about Quinnipiac is the size of the school. When you walk down dorm road you know at least ten people, you're rarely in a class bigger than twenty five kids, and you're guaranteed to know at least one person in all of your classes. However, our enrollment is growing, which is great, but the school has yet to accommodate for the rapid growth. The service in the cafe is slow and it's always crowded. Thankfully, we just finished new dorms and we don't have to worry about overcrowded rooms anymore. Last semester there was a big controversy with the student newspaper and the administration. They were practicing a closed door policy and basically forbade anyone from talking to the student media. When the Chronicle staff decided to speak out about it, the editor of the paper was threatened and he almost lost his job.

I love the way Quinnipiac looks, its beautiful and in the spring and the fall it everyone hangs out on the QUAD giving the school a real college look, I love it. I think, for me, the school is the perfect size. Personally, the one thing I would change is the parking situation as well as the cafeteria. The cafe is way to small for the amount of students at Quinnipiac. I should be able to walk through to simply buy a water without wasting 15 minutes just fighting the crowd. Sometomes i think the administration accepts too many new students making living at Quinnipiac difficult. I dont think that it is a college town even though there are a few bars there isnt anything that makes it stand out as a typical college town.

When I tell people I go to Quinnipiac the typical response is "Where?" or sometimes "Oh the polling place?" Yes, we do have a polling institute on campus that some students do work for; but no it is not the polling place and the name really is not all that hard to pronounce: Quin-ni-pi-ac. Quinnipiac is a small university nestled in the tiny town of Hamden, CT right outside of New Haven. Hamden, although small has a few main shopping areas with big stores, a movie theatre, bowling alley, restaurants, and more. With Sleeping Giant Park acting as a mountainous backdrop set up against an almost always-bright blue sky, QU's campus is absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful scenery along with all brick buildings, the schools signature bell tower (it’s in almost every advertising picture, the bells drive me absolutely nuts though), and perfect green grass that stretches all across campus no matter what season it is. The students joke about the amount of care maintenance puts into the school’s perfect grass, you can always see at least one of them with their little carts out taking care of it. The food isn't horrendous, but a little bit more variety would be great especially on the weekend. Dominoe's and other take out restaurants visit campus more frequently than commuter students.

The best thing about Quinnipiac is the serenity and beauty that is on campus. Quinnipiac gives off a sheltering feeling and makes its students feel safe inside. I would like to change the ideas of racial intolerance on campus and hate to think the actions of a one or a small number could ruin the idea of the secureness Quinnipiac University gives off to its students. I believe Quinnipiac is just the right size and size was one of the reasons I chose it. Most people either have never heard of Quinnipiac, or know it for polling or the health sciences, although it is slowly building up a name for its other majors. I spend most of my time on campus in the school's student run radio station or in the library, if I'm not in class or my room. Hamden is not really a college town, but it also isnt as bad as it could be. As a 21 year old student, I find there are many welcome businesses to students who are of age to go to bars. However, for the most part the town does not seem to welcome the idea of Quinnipiac expansion and does not tolerate of campus students very well. I have had a very positive experience with the professors at Quinnipiac University and have chosen most of my classes according to the professors available. The only issues I have had with administration on campus is with working to plan events for my organizations and appeal for rights to hold events off campus. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the writing of racial slurs on a black students wall. It was very unsettling to think that students who go to Quinnipiac could be as ignorant and backminded to do things like that. There is some school pride at Quinnipiac, however I believe it has grown tremendously since I have come. The only unusual aspect I find about Quinnipiac is that there is an eerie level of perfection on the grounds. No matter how much trash is thrown out into the grounds the night before, the morning after everything is spotless by 8 am. The Quad always looks beautiful and the trees that line dorm road are too, although they smell awful in early spring. I will always remember the May Weekends at Quinnipiac. They were the last weekends before finals where students could all hang out on the quad and there was free food and other novelty games and items to play and win. It was canceled last year due to the fact that administration felt that the "partying" got out of hand, and the loss of may weekend has brought about alot of complaints. Other complaints are that there is not enough parking for commuters or even for Sophomores and Juniors, or that it is annoying to get to the parking lots. Also the food in the cafeteria is getting better but also very expensive.

The best thing about Quinnipiac is it's campus and surroundings. That is why most people are attracted to the school in the first place. Sleeping Giant Mountain is gorgeous, and the quad is well-maintained. I would change the parking situation by creating more lots. Its ridiculous that we have to take a shuttle to our cars in a seperate parking lot, which can take up to 30 minutes. -The school size is perfect...its medium. If your an prospective student you should know this... If you want a large school or a small one look elsewhere. -Alot of people don't know what a "Quinnipiac" is. -Most of the time I am either in class, or in my dorm. Meetings and social gatherings during the week are frequent as well. -I wouldn't really call Hamden a college town... the community isn't very accepting of the students here. I would say relations are decent, however. There is some things to do off campus on Whitney Ave, but New Haven is where it's at. -The QU administration is fine... Res Life and Financial Aid, however, are don't listen much to students concerns, and seem to not care at times. - The big controversy this year was the President and Administrations attempts to Censor the student Newspaper, The Chronicle. An article was released earlier in the year were President Lahey felt he was misquoted (He wasn't). The university then came up with a ridiculous policy where students were required to e-mail their interviews with faculty to PR before anything is released to the press. The editor of the chronicle was nearly fired and The Chronicle itself was in jeopardy, as many editors would have walked if this happened. It didn't, and as of now everything is back to normal, for the most part. -There is some school pride. SGA has tried to increase school spirit with "Spirit Week", but not many students seemed to care. We are not really a big sports school outside of Men's Hockey, and there are many apathetic students on campus. -I find it unusual, rather ironic, that the school website says students here are their "first, second, and third priorities" yet it is almost impossible to contact administrators for interviews, speak to advisors who only have office hours 2 hours out of the week, and register for classes which are full but needed to graduate. It's also unusual that the new statue outside the TD Banknorth Sports Center is NOT a Bobcat, rather a Mountain Lion. -I will never forget May Weekend last year... RIP -Frequent complaints: PARKING, lack of housing on campus, long shuttle waits, expensive tuition, lack of communication between schools, Cancellation of May Weekend
