Northwestern University Top Questions

Describe the students at Northwestern University.

Benji

NU students are definitely opinionated but not really outspoken about their opinions. Most students are from the midwest or east coast, but there are not really cliques by regions. Most students are not incredibly wealthy, coming from middle class homes that want their children to get a good education. Most students are predominantly left. Most students are focused on getting an education, and not really their future wealth.

THere is a large lgbt community here and it really opens peoples eyes no matter what kind of town they come from. It just sucks that socioeconomically, Northwestern has too many high SES students and does not help lower SES ones out very much. They tyypically feel out of place alot. Students are from all around here and I like that its not all midwestern students and that we have such a large international population. I can, however, name things that every NU student has here: a northface fleece, a northface backpack, ugg boots, lombeshon purse, burberry scarf or ear muffs. Shows what "daddys money" pays for. Unfortunantly, our athletes really stick out here b/c of what they wear around. Almost all students get all dressed up for class because thye were "raised that way" and you rarely see people go to class in sweatpants and sweatshirts. Its a way for people to show off their money. we need more racial groups on campus. You rarely see hispanics or african americans.

There is some diversity on campus but the majority of people are Asian or Jewish. The students are also predominately from Illinois, New York, and California. I feel like everyone here is friendly, and understanding of each other. It is not a cut-throat environment, but rather a friendly environment on campus. I like that the student body is, for the most part, motivated, and dedicated to school work and extra-curricular activities. I'd say most of the student body is left wing, being very liberal.

Ryan

Not a very diverse campus but any diversity that may exist is not at all integrated.

Charlie

Social life is driven by fraternities and sororities and heavy drinking. Students do not do much besides class and drink. Few people seem to be involved in extracurriculars. Pretty fun overall as the people who go out like to go out really hard. Students are often work hard play hard - they will do homework all day and then party all night. Pretty diverse student body which is cool, but almost everyone is extremely rich.

Kat

I think that Northwestern has a pretty diverse student body, besides the fact that there are a lot of white caucasions. But, besides racially, there are people of all different upbringings, and of all different likes and dislikes, of all different political affiliations -- mostly left or center though. I hear alot of people saying they want to be rich one day.

Laura

Sometimes I think Northwestern is deceptively not very diverse at all. There's clearly a large representation of select minorities, but I don't think it necessarily reflects the world around us. My mom always asks me on the phone if I'm sick of all the rich spoiled kids yet.

Paul

It seems like most of the kids at NU went to public school and were the smartest ones at their schools. As a result, there is sort of an overachiever attitude from most of the student body. But, it is a pretty big student body so you are bound to find people that you want to hang out with. I can say that I will keep my friends from college for many years to come. Students do tend to sort of divide up, which is largely the result of the Greek system. But I have many friends outside of my fraternity as well as within it. Overall, I would say the campus is pretty liberal, but I think it would be pretty hard to find any college that wasn't.

Andy

I think any kind of student can find a niche at Northwestern. There are certainly students and groups who are not as open, but there is definitely an atmosphere of tolerance. Most students are from upper middle class socioeconomic backgrounds. There are spheres of political activism and awareness on campus, but not everyone is involved. Students are predominantly left, but there are also significant conservative presences on campus (Young Republicans).
