Describe the students at Northeastern University.

Eric

The Northeastern campus is constantly flowing with activities. Everytime I walk through campus I see an events taking place whether it be free hand outs, musical shows, or college clubs looking for new recruits. The students of Northeastern are very friendly despite the fact you are in a city. You have the opportunity to meet a large array of diverse individuals.

Ashley

Coming from a small homogenous town in Western Massachusetts, Northeastern is very dynamic to me. There are clubs for every type of minority you can think of, but that doesn't seem to be enough for the people from the melting pot of Manhattan. At the end of the day, everyone puts on there jeans and t-shirts, walk to class, sit with the same people and listens to there lectures. People come from all financial walks of life, almost all are on some sort of aid, and they all have there opinions, not-enough to more then absolutely necessary. Its a very liberal campus where opposite views (like my own) can have a tendency to stick out. Everyone is career driven and most are focused on that bottom line salary 10-15-20 years down the road

There are lots of international students, especially from India and from the middle east and there are lots of Asians and African-Americans. very diverse. However the majority is Caucasian

Tate

Everyone is pretty accepting.. There are so many international students but it's all gravy because everyone gets along.

Barbara

Students are somewhat politically aware and are mostly left/democrat/liberal. There are a ton of different types of groups on campus, but I wasn't involved in any because I've worked part-time all through college and did not have time. Most students come from families who live comfortably, middle and upper middle class. Some are wealthy too. Different types of students do interact somewhat, but more often students are separated by different groups. The black kids, jocks, stoners, etc... all sit at separate tables in the cafeteria. I don't necessarily think any student would feel out of place. Even though students tend to cluster with people who are like them, Northeastern is so big that anyone would be able to find their niche.

Lorie

It's a pretty good mix at Northeastern. Everyone eventually finds their slot. Sometimes it may take some time, but everyone fits in somewhere here. In class, you'll have a mix of wardrobes. You'll have people who roll out of bed and show up in sweats and flip flops. You'll also have people all dolled up for an 8am class. There is interaction between different types of students. This happens more when there are group projects in class. A lot of students are from Massachusetts. I think a lot of the students who attend NU are financially comfortable. Many of us also have jobs to pay for our extracurricular acitivites. There are many students who are politically aware and active. There are clubs geared towards this interest.

Alex

Northeastern is a school that prides itself on diversity. The vast majority of kids are white.

Alex

Extremely diverse. Possibly not at first sight, as much of the campus can appear homogeneous. But through clubs and activities every kind of person is represented. There really is a niche for everyone, and I don't think there is any one type of person that wouldn't fit in at NU. Sometimes you just have to go searching...

ron

Apathetic. Diverse and growing but still apathetic.

Emily

The largest minority on campus is Asian (about 7{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}), and I feel like there are very few black students. The financial aid offerings are limited at NU, which I think has to do with the fact that students entering NU are coming with larger family incomes. Students are very fashionable in class. Many students at NU are NOT politically aware inside or outside of the university. We have a strong business program and we are a research institute, so there is heavy emphasis on that rather than the social sciences. Poor students on campus would feel out of place socially. It is difficult to even afford living around campus, unless you can afford the rising prices of the West Village on-campus housing. Students at NU are predominantly left-liberal. It is pretty clear that engineering & business students will be earning the most out of the student body. Architecture students are busy in the studio, but they have an accelerated Master's program, along with Physical Therapy and Nursing, which they can attain at Northeastern in 6 years.
