There are a variety of different groups and activities you can join on campus!

Some of the most popular groups on campus are Greek Life, Wesley, Aggies for Christ, and FFA. I am involved in Greek Life and I love it. It has opened a lot of doors to leaderships on campus and academic success that I would not have found otherwise. The other, most important thing Greek Life has given me, is the opportunity to be philanthropically active. Not only for my own philanthropic cause, but for all of the other causes represented on campus. Students in the dorms do not tend to leave their doors open, but are very friendly with one another. Athletic events are growing in popularity as our athletic teams get better and better with each passing year. Guest speakers and theater events are not as popular, but are still highly attended by students and community members. The dating scene on campus is hard to describe. It seems like a very normal environment, where people meet people with similar interests and they go out for a movie or some ice cream. Every year we have Homecoming and big rivalry games that are very popular on campus. People at NMSU do party a lot. There is a very friendly environment that lends itself to a very social atmosphere that tends to lead to partying. If you are awake at 2am on a Tuesday, you are probably studying. Fraternities and Sororities are very visible on campus, although they do not represent a large portion of the student body. In Las Cruces, there is not much to do in terms of night life, but El Paso i just 30 minutes away and they have a lot of options. The movie theaters in Las Cruces are pretty much what people do if they are not drinking on a Saturday night. However, a lot of people go to clubs in El Paso to dance and choose not to drink so they can drive home afterward. Off campus there is a ton of excellent food, some shopping, hiking, and a lot of places to exercise.

We have nearly 100 campus clubs or groups that are registered on campus, thats a lot! No matter what your interests are there is a club for you, and if there isn't it is very easy to start your own. We also have greek life on campus, but they do not dominate the campus. If an incoming student is not interesting in joining a group there are many chances for students to participate in events with out being group members. We have intramural sports where are really fun to do as well!

I am fairly certain that it is impossible to run out of things to do at New Mexico State University; there is quite literally something for everyone. There are over 200 Student Organizations on campus ranging from academic clubs to religious clubs and everything in between. As for off-campus activities, there is even more to choose from. I don’t think it is a big secret that NMSU is known as a party school, so I won’t try to deny it. The truth is parties are a big part of college life, and NMSU is no different. Something that really stands out to me about NMSU is their promotion of safe and responsible partying and drinking. NMSU offers the “Crimson Cab” which is a free taxi service that will pick you up from a party and take you home for free with your student ID. It is a lot of fun to party and be social in college; the trick is knowing your limits, having friends you can trust, and always putting school first. NMSU offers you all the tools to achieve this balance successfully. Besides drinking and going to parties, there are plenty of things to do around town and on campus to keep you busy. My favorite thing to do on the weekends is hike. Some of the best hiking I have ever experienced has taken place here in Las Cruces. The Organ Mountains offer many different hikes of varying difficulty levels and the scenery is unbelievable. There are also a few theaters here in town that offer plays most nights of the week as well as a Farmer’s Market. There are even things like “The Whole Enchilada”…a festival that happens every year where the world’s largest enchilada is made and served to the people at the festival. One of my favorite places to eat is Ump-88 on Taco Tuesday’s, where you can get unlimited tacos for 50 cents each.

Luckily all organizations are inviting and enthusiastic about involvement. I am now personally a member of the PreVet Club and I am the President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at NMSU. I am also involved in many other extra-curricular activities off-campus. If Greek life is your thing, the sororities and fraternities at NMSU are extremely active on-campus and in their philanthropy. My roommate is the President of the Panhellenic Council here at NMSU and there is not a day that goes by that she isn’t doing something fun within Greek life. There are many groups to be involved with at NMSU and in the Las Cruces community. On campus, the most well known groups are the social fraternities and sororities. They are the most noticeable groups, and the most involved on campus. There are 12 fraternities and 6 sororities at NMSU. These 18 groups are constantly doing community service and showing their Aggie pride. Other popular groups on campus include religious groups, academic fraternities, and club sports. Intramural sports are a big deal on campus, especially for males. There are many intramural sports offered from 7v7 flag football to water polo to ultimate frisbee. During the school week the Corbett Student Union is always packed with people. There is the Crossroad eating area that many students hang out at, as well as Taos, the cafeteria. On the weekends, in the fall semester, the student tailgate lot is full of people getting to know each other and have a good time, followed by the football games. There is not too much Nightlife in Las Cruces, so students normally go to house parties on the weekends. For those students who are not interested in drinking, there are many groups that do outdoor adventures, such as hiking and snowboarding in Ruidoso. There are so many opportunities at NMSU and they are all waiting for you!

Greek life is pretty large here. There are about 13 fraternities and 6 sororities. There are a lot of typical frat boys and very few upstanding gentleman. Athletics are enjoyable here and school spirit is fairly high.
