Some typical stereotypes of students at Morgan State University are that we are a bunch of party animals and thugs who have a high rate in STD's. Though there have been some rowdy parties thrown by a couple Frats, I wouldn't classify MSU students as party animals but as studious young adults who like to have a good time every once in awhile. The next stereotype if "thugs" comes as no surprise to me on account of we are an HBCU and people are quick to judge a book by its cover. Walking around campus you may find a few African American males dressed as "thugs" but for every one of them there's three dressed for success and if you sit and talk to any of the three you will find that there is more than what meets the eye. As for the high rate in STD's I can't defend my school in saying that's a lie. We are located in the one of the nations highest area diagnosed with AIDS. However I can defend my school saying they do a great job bringing awareness on campus and providing protection to us students. All in all Morgan State University is a great institution despite the stereotypes and I'm glad to call it home.

Most people think of Morgan as a Party school. This may be because from Monday to Monday there is a party going on somewhere in the community or the Baltimore area, but when you get to college you have to realize that you are there for a purpose and that is to get a degree. There will alwyas be a party so wait to party after you get all of your work done.

Morgan gives a chance to some students who would not have had a chance anywhere else. This is such a needed thing because its not always that students with a 'C' or 'D' are not intelligent. Often its because they lack motivation and students find that here! There is a lot of talent here and a decent staff with a handful of awesome teachers. If someone tells you they did not learn anything, it is because they were not listening. And yes Morgan State students do party, but not all of them and not all the time. There is a time and a place for everything and students party when its time to party and study when its time to study. Of course you have the students who do nothing but party but you have that at any school and you just have to avoid them. All in all if you stay focused you will be successful and enjoy your matriculation through at Morgan State University.

Morgan State is known for many of its students partying hard. From the outside it may seem that way because in high school word does travel fast about our parties. Little do people recognize the school parties as much as it works. Morgan is a great educational institution. We have a world class teaching staff which increases the quality of our students' experiences in classrooms and laboratories throughout the campus and in communities across the country.

The most common stereotype about my university is that we are a party school and all of the students party more than we study. This stereotype is inaccurate. At Morgan State we do indeed party hard, but we STUDY HARDER. College is about the experience, while our university does promote fun, we have tons of academic opportunities for students that allows them to become academic scholars. Through late library hours, the proffessors reasonable office hours, and numerous tutoring centers on campus, Morgan State builds scholars first and then the fun comes after.

Morgan State University extends its arms to students who might have "passed with C's" and need a new slate to create artwork with their lives. A huge stereotype associated with the "second chance" mentality at any school, is that the low standards (2.0 GPA, 1000 SAT score, etc.) equate to a less valuable student body. Is this accurate? Taking into consideration the 24-hour visitation our students haven't earned, or the underperformances resulting in refusal of accreditation and withholding of state funding, I cannot disagree. The "second chance" target group is comprised of two types of students: the student who feels privileged to have been given the opportunity to change their life, and the student who feels because a "second chance" school was their only option, that they were entitled to that option. Unappreciative students anywhere jeopardize the reputation of their alma mater, as they stir the pot of mediocrity and immaturity.

It is vastly believed that students who graduate from Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a competitive disadvantage in attaining employment when compared to students from private owned colleges and Ivy League universities. This stereotype is overly exaggerated as it overshadows the accomplishments of these colleges and universities. Yes, HBCU’s may have inadequate infrastructure, lower university ranking, and other demerits, however outstanding students do graduate from these colleges. As a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering in Morgan State University, I was impressed by the number of students who graduated with Bachelors in Engineering in May 2011 and were immediately recruited in full time jobs after their graduation. This included students from under-represented regions in the country and even international students. Hence, the productivity of a student after college depends on his/her participation while in school; keeping up with a good GPA, participating in extracurricular activities, engaging in community services, having internships and co-ops, building a good resume and possessing an excellent personality. It is unfortunate to see students who are graduating seniors yet do not have plans for the future. People who never interned or participated in school activities yet graduate and then blame it in attending an HBCU. It is a pity that such students contribute to the statistics that the lower rankings of HBCU’s. A lot is said about the management and planning of schools. However, the school does its own part and the rest is in the hand of the students. The Faculty and staff at Morgan is one I can boast of as they are well-qualified, committed, and very concerned about the progress of students. There may be some difficult professors, but students should not be deterred from their goals because the excesses of other individuals. Overall, Morgan State University is an outstanding HBCU and even as an international student, I am impressed by the educational standards.
