Being a theatre kid, I know the burden of preparation and work and how it can sometimes interfere with other aspects of your life. Everyone suffers the burdens of class and homework, but the extracurriculars are interesting wild cards. While your level of participation is completely your own choice, theatre people such as myself will throw themselves fully into their work. Rehearsals will run late into the night or early into the morning. You'll stumble into the Gizmo, bleary-eyed and hungry because you haven't eaten since dinner which was hours ago. As you sit and munch on your breakfast bagel, you realize you still have that english paper to write. It's a fine balancing act. With this in mind, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain a social life. I know my friends have "yelled" at me many times, complaining that they never get to see me anymore because I'm usually at rehearsal. It's really funny in a sad way. Me and my friend Kurtis are usually trapped in CFA because I'm in a play and he's working on his latest art project. Lucas practically lives in SMC with all the computer programming work he does. Sometimes when you get together with your friends, you sit back and realize that it's been a few day since you've seen each other because you've been so busy with work.

Ultimate frisbee is the most popular non varsity sport. Of the varsity sports, football is probably most popular with a lot of townspeople going to the games, and even the practices. Athletic events are somewhat popular. The sports teams are generally not so good, but there a few exceptions every year. Partying is a common weekend event, but students that party too much will not last one term here. One of the things I love about Knox, is that I never need to lock my doors and I haven't for two full years(except over winter and spring break.)

I'm involved with Rugby and the Knox College Choir. Rugby is new and was started by two first year girls. Besides them, most of us had never played rugby or even watched a match. I love it now and am a little obsessed. I'm also involved in the Knox College Choir, or KCC. I've made some awesome friends here, especially after we toured in Spain over spring break. Each year there is pumphandle and Flunk Day. Pumphandle is where everyone in the school shakes everyone else's hand. Flunk Day is a suprise day in the spring where all classes are cancelled and there is a ton of random activity, like a foam pit and concerts (this year was Swizzle Tree and Lucky Boys Confusion). Unfortunately, Flunk Day also causes Flunk Day scares, where people run around at 5 in the morning screaming flunk day and it really isn't. I hate Flunk Day scares, because I don't want to wake up at 5 in the morning if it isn't flunk day. Most of the time I had only been in bed for 2 hours or so anyways. Fraternitites and sororities have been a topic of controversy lately. Many people felt that they had been lied to when they were told that the greek community wasn't very prominent on campus. Well, they kind of are. Most parties are held by greek organizations, as well as most of the fundraisers. I remember an instance where someone said "I know there's a lot of greeks, but I don't know if I realized it until I saw everyone wearing these lime green greek week shirts." I've also heard that the greek population is the same as it was way back when, but now there are more groups. The population is just spread out among more organizations. That all being said, there really isn't any pressure to join a greek organization, and you can still have an awesome social life without joining a greek organization. Sometimes Knox manages to bring in amazing speakers and groups. I went to a lot of the musical acts, such as the Tuvan Throat Singers, Mountain Lions International, Swizzle Tree and Lucky Boys Confusion. There was also the AMEBA dance group and several other things.

Knox is a pretty safe environment. Of course, like any other place, there are some cases of rape, may be murder, etc. But leaving the dorm room open during the day is alright. You may want to lock your doors at night, since Galesburg is not a very pretty place. Athletic events are not popular, since every athletic team in Knox pretty much sucks. I was in the soccer team and if I remember right, we lost every game except one that the other team didn't show up. The coach sucks as well. That sucker told me that Knox had the reputation of being a good team. Like we say in Argentina "las pelotas!!!" Do you imagine bunch of nerds and dorks playing sports? Well, again, welcome to Knox. People still go and watch them, and many of them are very proud of their team. Prairie Fire. What a mascot, hahahaha. If you are player, be careful, girls in Knox are drama queens. They might even accuse you of rape if they want to. NO KIDDING. So pick the right girl, but is very hard to pick in Knox. And not surprisingly, my closest friends are multicultural people as well. But even the international students are nerds. That shouldn't surprise you, would you send your naughty kid abroad? No way. Flunk day is the "climax" of Knox. If you are one of the "Knox people", you will love it. For people like us, it still sucks. People here talk about it so much that makes you wanna spit on them. They hype it out so much, but in fact, it sucks. Just a fun fair for little kids. Frat boys are dumb as hell. If you take a closer look a frats in this college, Those people I just described, sheltered, unexperienced all joined the frats. So frats here are composed by posers. Sororities? Not very sure, I don't really talk to any of them. There is nothing you can do in Knox in weekends. Again, if you are one of the typical Knox students, you will love it. If you are one of those that has been to real parties, you will realize Knox parties are worse than those held in Latin American high schools. I went out my first term of freshmen year to meet people and get to know Knox, but then is the same dumb shit over and over. I stopped going out at all after a month. Not worthy. We have much more fun between us in our own lounge, where we literally do whatever the fuck we want. You are more than welcome if you want to join us. But if you wanna go and do poser stuff, we won't stop you.

SOCIAL LIFE KICKS ASS! Events, parties, sporting games...it overall blows my mind here. If you choose to drink then you will have no problem finding friends that want to do the same. If you choose not to drink then you will also have no problem finding friends. There is just so much to do and the parties are stellar. Not to brag or anything, but Knox gets a lot of visitors from UofI and big universities that claim to have more fun here than at their own schools.

Academics keep us pretty busy during the week, or at least feeling like we should be busy, but Knox students certainly like to let off the steam often. Weekends can be very fun wandering from place to place all within a close radius (no driving), but students looking for more of a clubbing scene might be disappointed by Galesburg's quaint but cozy bars. Parties can be very fun and are easy to organize. Another plus is that only security patrols campus-- no cops allowed unless something is seriously dangerous and they are called in. Student theatre and music performances are generally high quality, and Knox does well to bring a wide array of interesting speakers and musical acts to campus throughout the year. John Ashcroft just visited recently to much protest and unrest among the students. It was fun.

The debate on Greek life at Knox has been prevalent this year. For a minority group of 33{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} the Greek community endures much scrutiny as well as what feels like persecution. It is strange that as a member of the minority, the Greek community should feel this way.

On campus, Greek life definitely dominates. Off campus, apart from the bars there is a movie theater and a park. Lack of outside entertainment is conducive to an environment for work.

There are a bunch of fraternities on campus which serve as social centers on the weekends, but those are not the only places where things go down. Athletics is something that is being improved on at Knox and is going to have a bright future. More and more students are starting to attend sporting events. Knox sponsors a ton of activities, every week there are outside speakers brought in, there are poetry and prose readings, there are art shows and dance shows. Every year there is the pumpe handle at the beginning of the year, where every student and faculty member get in a long line and everyone shakes hands with everyone. Also, spring term there is Flunk Day, a day where classes are cancelled and everyone enjoys the day off and the activities available outside. This year for Flunk Day they actually had Lucky Boys Confusion play a concert that night.
