Kent State University at Kent Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Michaela

There is no information that was not hidden from me, or surprising. Every student is very informed .

I wish I would have known what I wanted to major in coming into college. I started in a major having no idea what it was and I ended up hating it and switching. It was a hassle and very stressful. I feel like my college career would have been completely different if I would have started undecided. It is very useful having that option as an incoming student.

The only thing that I wish I know about Kent State University before I enrolled is that the availability of some courses were very slim into getting because of the size. I have had to wait a few times for a class before I finally got in and it actually set me back a bit.

I have always been told to apply early for scholarships, admissions, the FAFSA, or any particular deadline. Before attending Kent, I really wish I listened to that advice more abidingly. I failed to note how paramount this can be, and it resulted with much unnecessary stress. Always prioritize your submissions, as many systems that involve applications tend to favor first come, first serve. While this is not always the case, letting procrastination lead you will only be a guide to regret. Putting things off will only end with rushed, misguided effort and decisions.

Before coming to Kent State University I had already known a good amount about it because of reasearch on the internet and a campus tour that I took. But in terms of the campus itself and the surrounding area I wish I had known that the surrounding town is not very large, this is not to say it is quiet and small because it is not, the town is largely geared toward the students and the community members welcome students with open arms, creating a sense of unity between the campus and the city of Kent.

I wish I had known the direct way to become a French Major with a focus on education, rather than stumbling about what classes to take for the first year. While I got a lot of my Kent Core classes done my freshman yea, I could have gotten a head start on my major, and now I feel left behind.

Kara

That the advisors and fincial counselors here are terrible they seem very uncaring and the size of the dorm rooms are smaller than expected and the fact that sometimes you cant fit all your classes into your schedule. Also the lack of fincial aid given to in state students.

Holly

Nothing really. Kent was pretty good about telling me about what I was getting myself into.

Torri

I wish I'd known more about the difficulty of the major, Architecture, that I'd enrolled in. Hearing from a current or former student would have been helpful in understand what I'd decided to study.

Shane

I wish I would have known how unprepared for life I really was. In high school I just skated by with a 2.5 GPA not really caring much about my academics or putting too much effort into my education or saving for college. My first few semesters in school I still had that high school mentality and I didn't do very well because of my poor school work habits. It took a lot of hard work but now that I'm finally getting back on track money is getting really tight for me and my family.
