What should every freshman at Kansas State University know before they start?

Rebecca

The best thing I have gotten about my college experience is that I can believe more in my self and that I can learn more and do something better with my life than what I thought wasn't possible. It has been so valuable to attend because no matter what I know that I can always learn more no matter what I already know.

I can't put a price on the value of what I've learned even in the first two weeks of classes, I've met so many amazing people, learned more about time managment than high school teachers could ever dream of lecturing me about, and much more.

It has taught me many lessons beyond those in taught in the classroom. It gave me lifetime friendships that I still hold many years later. My undergraduate research placed me well ahead of the curve when it comes to competing with other undergraduate researchers for giving technical discussions/talks, as well as utilizing my time in studying and research-centered activities.

It is said that getting a college degree will open new opportunities in life. What is not credited enough, however, are the opportunties that arise during the college experience. I am not emphasizing the obvious-the educational benefits such as a large library and endless academic resources, but instead, the learning opportunities regarding life. College students are suddenly forced to create lifestyles for themselves. Between juggling scholastic obligations and neverending campus activities, college students are expected to live. Some might get lost in that mess. I did. The first year of college, my schedule was filled to the brim everyday with studying, meetings, hanging out, and the occasional meal or two. It was during my first summer home that I realized that I had been living too quickly and losing track of my goals. My desire to dedicate my life to humanitarian architecture overseas was reignited. My schoolwork has new meaning, my busy schedule is more fulfilling, and among countless other things, going to college has taught me that my tendency to live fast was hindering my ability to focus on what matters in my life.

In my time at K-State, I have been fortunate to be given many opportunities. These opportunities have not been given but earned. Developing a strong work ethic is a strong value i have learned while attending K-State. I have also experienced many highs and lows in colleg and learning to keep my balace is another instance that K-State has afforded me. While attending K-State, i was heavily involved in the School of leadership studies program and the amount of wealth I learned from my time in the minor has done more than shape who I am today. The acronym C.C.I. is something i developed which stands for communicate, connect, and inspire. With these three things, I feel anyone in this world can be successful. Everything I am today, I thank K-State for (as well as my parents)!

To me college is not purely an educational experience. College is as much about social learning as it is educational. Although friends won't get you a degree, the connections you make in college will be with you for the rest of your life. I have been to unbelievable places and seen amazing things while in college. If i had chosen not to attend college these opportunities would have never been available to me. Another reason why college has and will remain to be valuable to me is that a degree is required in the career I want to go into. There are many benifits to attending college. I have not experienced all of them yet but, even the short amount of time I have spent here so far has opened doors for my future.

Growth spirtually. When I arrived to K-State I had felt like I had stagnated in my faith and relationship with God. During my time on campus I looked at a number of different campus ministries and decided to join with Icthus. It turned out to be one of the best decesions of my life. While apart of Icthus I got connected with people who were searching for the same growth I was and we were all able to help each other. This coming year I will be a lifegroup leader of an outdoor ministry outreach asscoiated with Icthus where I am now leading the efforts for fundraising a spring trip retreat for a week hike in the Grand Canyon to have personal reflection opportunities and be able to witness along the trail.

I am currently working towards my Educational Leadership Doctorate and I believe that I, as a student and teacher, have established a desire to learn and instill that value of education to my students. Kansas State University, and all such institutions, offer the environment to better oneself academically and socially.

The most important lesson I have gotten out of my college experience so far is the chance to find myself and what I am capable of. Whether balancing a demanding academic schedule to a busy social life of my college experience. Many things about me are changing as I take on new experiences. In class I have begun a development of problem solving for more complex problems. Outside of class I am building new relationships, participating in new clubs and taking part of Greek life. These opportunities that I have taken advantage of are giving me chances to build on my past experiences and grow both socially and developmentally. Going to college may be financially expensive but the life lessons I have learned in one year greatly out weight the costs of tuition and fees.

I have gained what I hope to be lifelong friends and a experience I will never forget in the dorms of K-State. I hope to always remember what I have learned in and out of class.
