Germanna Community College Top Questions

What should every freshman at Germanna Community College know before they start?

Heather

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to take some harder classes and challenge myself, rather than taking my senior year "easy." I would try to motivate myself to work harder and suggest that I should take some dual enrollment courses, therefore giving me a headstart on college credits.

The main advice I would give myself is to not only go to college but stay in college and finish getting a degree. This is the second time I have attended college and as a thirty-four year old single parent working two jobs and going to school, my life would have been better and easier if I had a degree to fall back on.

If I could go back into my senior years, I wouldn't let myself be bothered by distractions. I gave up so much when I succumbed to what I placed value in and the things that were actually of great importance. I would have tried to build memories with the people that were with me. I would have studied harder and applied to multiple colleges and scholarships instead of ignoring the constant pleas of my parents who knew better. Things would have been different had I followed a different ambition and gave myself the chance to do it all over again. Maybe I would have adverted some hardships that I'm currently facing. Maybe I would be in different surroundings where I can be enriched with the pleasantries of life and academe and fufilled my scholarly dreams of becoming a graphic designer. Alas, we cannot turn back the hands of time and re-do what has already been done and I will have to live with the decisions I made.

If I could talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to do more! That seems so general, but my life was so boring during my senior year. I would tell myself to stop procrastinating and get my license, fill out more college applications, complete my FAFSA on time, attend more sports games, and socialize with people I didn't know that well. As I'm getting older and advancing in my education, I realize how important it is to fully take advantage of all of the opportunities around you!

Knowing what I know now I think I would encourage myself to continue my education. I completed a diploma in Surgical Technology and always wanted to get my nursing degree but, as usual, life seemed to get in the way. I also feel that a person needs to work with what they have and if school is not an option right out of High School don't give up. When I went to college the first time I had to find a career that I could start working at very quickly. When I was seventeen, I was on my own. I had to work and pay my way through college. I am very proud of what I have accomplished and I do not know if I would go back and change anything other than continuing my education. I feel the path that has led up to who I am as a person was the best path for me and I am grateful for the opportunity to return to school.

I don't really have any advice to give myself, except I would tell myself what major I eventually chose. I decided to take a year off and then do a year at community college before transferring because I didn't know what I wanted during my senior year of high school. If I had known that neuroscience was an option then, I would have chosen it sooner, and I'd be at a four-year college getting my bachelor's right now, instead of at Germanna getting my associate's.

I would have told myself to take advantage of all the opportunites that were avalible to me in high school to obtain college credits, and work harder in classes to get better grades. High school really does effect your college career. I didnt think so when I was in high school and just coast through school.
