I would like to see FIU develop a more rigorous standard for admission into both the University and its individual colleges. It seems that anyone can get into the University. This idea is perpetuated by the fact that most students are commuters, and out-of-state students are few and far between.

I think our school lacks school spirit. I always see students wearing other school jerseys and hats which I think proves it. The fact that most student go to class and then switch over to school i think is irrelevant to the lack of school spirit. I think the panther, or mascot, should be a tangible and mascot of more presence in the school.

Ari

No, not at all. I'm a hard-working student who came to FIU with a high school GPA of 5.17 and have found this university to be as academically intellectual as UF, which many of my high school friends go to. Those who wish for a higher education can find one at FIU.

These stereotypes are extremely misguided. It is mostly people from the surrounding area that hold FIU with such little regard. This is due to the fact that FIU is a relatively new institution and when it first opened it did have much lower standards. However, they school has undergone great reforms since then. FIU now has a leading law school, nursing school, and business school with international connections. Not to mention the recently instated Honors College. In addition to this, FIU has gradually raised its acceptance criteria. This is a large university with a very wide range of fields that students may take courses in. The opportunity to experience such a range opens the door to many opportunities and truly broadens students scope of interests.

I think the part about the tuition rate being a big incentive is true because many students, including me, could not afford any other school without loans. But as far as it being a school for students who couldn't go somewhere else I think that is incorrect because me and many of my friends got into other school but decided on FIU.
