Here at FIT there are a lot of student activities for you to get involved in. I am currently involved in CAB and ACM.
CAB stands for Campus Activities Board. This is an organization where the students set up activities for the campus. For example, bringing in bands like Reel Big Fish or perhaps an on campus game like Humans VS Zombies.
ACM stands for Association for Computing Machinery. This is a computer society available on campus. We get together once a week to discuss new technology, or perhaps teach each other about what we have learnt. For example, one of our own students had set up a presentation on how to develop games for iOS.
One fun group to get involved in is College Players. This is where students come together and set up a theatrical performance. I hope to be a part of this group next semester as tech support.
Since FIT is located near the coast, a very popular activity off campus is surfing. After classes many students choose to spend their time relaxing at the beach and perhaps catching a wave or two. This is great way to reduce any stress and just have fun with your friends.

A lot of the fraternities and sororities are active on campus. There's a lot of pull with those groups and there are so many good things about getting involved with those different organizations on campus. I'm not involved with a sorority but I'm involved with the biological honor society, the marine biological society, and the acting group (college players). We don't really leave our doors open because I live in an apartment style living where my door leads to the outside and we don't want bugs all in the apartment, but people are in and out of each others rooms all the time. I met my closest friends through acting. There are parties every weekend as well as during the week. If you know the right people (or keep your ears open around campus) you'll always hear about new things going on.

The most popular groups on campus are definitely the fraternities and sororities. The students in these tend to be popular on campus.
I am involved with ResLife. Being an RA, i come across all kinds of students and get to interact with them. I have observed that students usually do not leave their doors open.
Athletic events are not much popular on campus, as visible from the negligible student attendance at the college games. Theater and guest speakers are moderately popular, depending on the occasion.
The dating scene is quite stereotypical in the sense that most of the students are looking forward to relationships. A lot of the students are dating other students from college.
I met my a lot of my friends during my freshman year because we were living in the same dorm.
If i am awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, i am either completing a homework assignment or chilling with my friends.
We have an event called 37 cents day that happens during Orientation week each Fall. In this event, students have to collect coins amounting exactly to 37 cents or its multiples and donate them at a booth. The team that donates the most wins.
Parties happen every weekend. Since there is barely anything to do during the weekends in the town, so a lot of students turn to drinking. Fraternities throw parties every other weekend, and there are house parties as well.
Greek life at my college is not too big. We have 8 fraternities and 3 sororities. However, greek life is expanding and three new fraternities have been chartered in the past 6 years. The greek culture is definitely important as they are considered to be the center of the social scene.
Last weekend, i was finishing up my tasks as an RA and preparing to leave for home for winter break.
There is really not much to do during weekends except for drinking and this further emphasizes the lack of social activities on campus.
Off campus, usually the students drink at parties.

I wouldn't really say that there are 'popular' groups to be involved in on campus. There are a TON of opportunities to be involved, but surprisingly, a lot of students don't choose to participate. There is a clear definition of who's who on campus, and those that get involved are considered campus leaders, and are known throughout the campus community. I am involved in Greek life at FIT (which is small greek system, most chapter have only about 40-50 members). I also work in the Greek Life office and I'm active as a student volunteer in new member orientation as well as homecoming committee. The nice thing about getting involved is the small community of active individuals which are also involved. You find yourself becoming good friends with others in different committees because of the time spent together and the overlap in involvement. On another note, the dating at FIT is not good. Especially if you're a male. The ratio of men to women is 6:4 (or something similar). The odds aren't good for guys, but they are great for girls. The social scene isn't the best if you aren't interested in drinking at all. Melbourne itself has a lot of different bars with a lot of exotic beer options. If you're very against drinking it would take some time to find social opportunities in the area. There aren't a lot of campus traditions, which is sometimes a downer due to the fact that traditions are so unique and fun, but we're always looking to make new traditions on the orientation team, and some of them are starting to stick, so maybe. Bottom line, getting involved on this campus is important. Not only to have more friendship opportunities, but also to keep yourself busy. I would higly encourage participation in greek life as it really propelled me to the status of campus leader which I'm very proud of. It gives you an immediate social boost and opens the door to meet 300+ people.
