The one thing I wish someone had told me about freshman year was to go out and make connections with people. I'm from a small town, so I'm used to just running around with one crowd. It took me a year to realize that you don't just need one set of friends. You want friends sharing your major, you want friends in the labs you have, friends in your dorm room. Don't get stuck; branch out!

I really wish that I knew more about the programs that I was going to be involved in. My school has a very prominent Pre-Pharmacy program and a lot of people come to this school because of it. Since most of the students that are in the school of sciences are Pre-Pharmacy majors, all of the general science classes are directed towards them. I am not a Pre-Pharmacy major and I wish that I knew about how the classes would be oriented towards non Chemistry/Biology majors.

Being a freshman, I came to school thinking I would have all the time in the world to get stuff done. I was wrong. I wish I would have known how to manage my time better, while balancing school and my social life.

The library usually closes at one. Also, their wifi is not as compatible with Linux systems as Windows or Macs; but of course, that is easily bypassable.

I came into Kaplan University knowing nothing. They were very helpful with every question I had. I wish I had known how easy it was to get into school and talk with financial aid.

I struggled during my college decision to pick between two schools. One was very large, the other moderately small. One thing that would have made my decision much easier that I wish I would have known before coming here is how approachable and how much attention you are able to receive from your professors at a smaller school, and particularily at Drake. They are always willing to help students and answer student's questions- it a really helpful resource to have so readily available.

I wish I would have known how academically challenging certain classes would be so I could have taken them in high school in order to prepare. I also wish I would have been aware of how many students at Drake come in with a ton of credits from AP and community college classes. I came in with 9 credits from AP classes and I don't have nearly as many as a lot of students. I would have definitely taken some classes at home the summer before my freshman year if I would have known that.

I wish I had known that the "ghetto" really was right next to school. One moment you're on campus, and the next you aren't. A few students have gotten into some trouble by straying on the edge of campus, so be prepared. Drake security does its best, but the danger is still there.

I wish that I had known more about how Drake's financial aid is distributed. The brochure says that the average student financial aid is much higher than what I know anyone to be getting. I got accepted into their competitive direct admit pharmacy program, which is why I am attending the school. My expected tuition is very hard for me to meet and I have to think of attending this university and program as an investment. The financial aid office is very unwilling to work with students on their aid situations, which is frustrating.
