I know most every teacher by name, and most of them know me by name as well. This has been very beneficial in creating a fostering learning environment. I am studying Computer Engineering, which is one of the more difficult majors at Cal Poly. Depending on which classes I'm taking, I study about 15-30 hours per week outside of class.
Cal Poly has great engineering programs and the faculty of the Computer Engineering Department are friendly and helpful. Cal Poly has a great reputation with employees and works very hard to help their students find work. They have a website where students can post their resumes and employers can access them. Though this website I have had an excellent job lined up for me since Sophomore year.

Every professor I have had knows my name and recognizes me outside of class.
Studying at Poly is really a personal issue, it can vary from not spending any time in your classes to spending a couple of hours every day for one class or for all classes. It is also greatly influence by your major (engineers will have to study more than business students, it's just the way it is).
Class participation is utilized in nearly every class I have had and the majority of teachers really know how to teach the information opposed to just presenting the info.

The professors are generally good people who all try and at least know your face, if not your name. One professor this quarter has a bet about knowing all our names by a specific date, and if he loses he'll get us a pizza party, so they're definitely human too.
I've taken a lot of scattered classes from having switched my major, so Intro to Interactive Gaming was pretty unique, Equine Management, and a bunch of sport classes (soccer, flag football, aquatics, bowling etc.) are offered every quarter, and know there are a ton more out there.
