Brown academics are very apealing because of the pass fail choice. Another important aspect of brown is being able to be in small classes, from between 3-20.

Professors are wonderful, a lot know me by name, i have taken wonderfully unique classes about race and ethnicity.

Everyone takes academics seriously for the most part becuase they are taking classes that they are legitimately interested in, not just trying to meet some core requirement. Education definitely isn't geared towards getting a job, but expanding your general range of knowledge.

The professors all want to teach, and the students want to learn. Because students are never forced to take a class, and there is heavy emphasis on undergraduate teaching, the learning is often for learning's sake.

My favorite classes are smaller classes with a lot of different kinds of informational representation. I like mixed media classes, utilizing movies as well as readings. I'm concentrating in International Relations, which is one of the most popular concentrations at Brown and extremely interdisciplinary.

For the most part ive only taken pretty small classes at brown which has allowed me to get to know the majority of my professors. as far as my experience has gone, the professors for the most part seem very eager and open to interacting with the students and helping us when necessary. The modern culture and media department, especially, is very small and intimate and therefore everyone knows eachother and is really eager to help everyone have a great learning experience.
Dylan
Students are not that competitive.
For serious, Brown students do have intellectual conversations outside of class, but they're usually high.
Gene
No core curriculum, professors are incredible, class participation is awesome, best international relations department in the country.
Devin
Academics are great because you can take whatever class you want. You can even take it pass/fail.

Brown education is geared towards acquiring a sense of academic responsibility. Brown boasts an "open curriculum" -- there are no core requirements aside from your major, which gives you a lot of freedom. Students take their classes because they want to -- therefore, class participation is high and interaction between students and professors is rampant. In fact, professors are quite open towards spending time with their students outside of class. Unfortunately, the responsibility that comes with an open curriculum also has its downsides -- many Brown students are downright self-righteous.
