What's your overall opinion of Bowling Green State University-Firelands?

7 Students rated Bowling Green State University-Firelands

Jada - 07/20/2020

BGSU Firelands is the best-sized school and area I have attended. BGSU Firelands' professors are extremely helpful, kind, and humorous in my opinion, yet they get their lectures completed. The student body size is on the lower side as Firelands is a branch for the main campus of BGSU. The campus itself is small, rural, and beautiful. The pond in the back of the campus of Firelands is great for unwinding after courses and in the warm weather. Firelands has a good-sized cafe as well, many vending machines on campus. The BGSU ID card is used for library printing, vending machines, and more. It is a wonderful, smaller college and the costs of being a student here are cheaper than where I completed my Associate of Arts in Columbus.

Jeff - 03/20/2019

I have been attending classes at BGSU Firelands since my Sophomore year in high school. I am currently in my senior year in high school and will graduate with an associates in science. Firelands is a wonderful small college for anyone in the area, especially people who haven't been to any college at all.

lexi - 11/12/2018

My overall experience is good. The campus is really small so tou cab get from place to place very easy. Their is no housing, everyone driving at least 10 minutes or more to get to campus. The food is expensive. The staff is helpful. If you are not fortunate like me its hard to drive back and forth without any gas money

eden - 10/20/2017

Class size varies from 10 -20 depending on time and day etc. Some teachers are excellent others just don't care, and will just do enough to "teach" you. The food is way overpriced for what it is. Its close to home, so that's a plus. Overall this is pretty okay school.

Bowling Green State University-Firelands FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at Bowling Green State University-Firelands?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for Bowling Green State University-Firelands is 100%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Being on your own will be scary at first. The independence is incredible, but you don't have mom and dad to wake you up for class. You don't have mom and dad to buy your food, or make your bed, or to clean your room. You have to set your own alarm clock, wash your own laundry, get to class on time by yourself, and not complain when things don't go your way. The hard part about this that you'll see a lot of your peers struggle with (and maybe drop out because of) is that your whining and complaints don't have an surface to bounce off of but yourself. If something goes wrong then it will be your fault, and it will be your responsibility to make it right. There's nobody to blame for your problems, and when the shit hits the fan you'll only have yourself to depend upon. It's a harsh reality for a lot of people, but that's only because they make the choice not to live up to the consequences of their own decisions. Be an adult, take responsibility for yourself, and you'll be fine.

  3. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

At Bowling Green State University, there are many stereotypes. But none of them really fit all students at BGSU. We have jocks, frat boys, nerds, etc., but none of them really fall into one category. Some nerds are great at basketball, some frat boys are starting charitable events, and jocks are doing extremely well in school. BGSU is a work hard during the week, party hard on the weekend school, and students here have a higher average GPA than most schools around the country. So, none of the stereotypes are completely accurate.

  4. Describe the students at your school.

The students at BG are a wide variety, but the amount of programs that are LGBT oriented are impressive. There is also a Black Student Union, Latino Student Union and dozens of other student organizations. The campus has a really active Greek life too. Most students wear whatever they want to class, a few will come in pajamas, I know I have. The students self-segregate in the dining centers. And there isn't very much interracial interaction, black students eat together, whites eat together.Students here are predominantly liberal, and not politically active at all. Out of 10,000 students in first ward, only 600< voted this year. Students are mostly undecided majors and/or careers that I talk to.

When you step off campus, you see restaurants and bars. Towards the north side of campus, there is a McDonalds, a Starbucks, Chipotle, Waffle House, and a gas station. Towards the south side of campus, there are two bookstores, Myle's Pizza and Pub, Grounds for Thought (a coffee shop), and several bars. There are several frat houses off campus, and, especially if you're a girl, you can always find a party to go to on the weeknights Down main st. there are restaraunts, but mostly more bars, pubs, and the like. There is a diner and also a few clubs, such as Cla'Zel's.

  6. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

No. Our student newspaper made a mistake in an article about our Health Center a long time ago, and it’s haunted them ever since. They actually came out and apologized and corrected their error. Lately, this myth has been dying because it’s just not true.

  8. Tell us about the sports scene on campus.

Bowling Green has over 15 intramural sports on-campus. They hold tryouts every year, and go around the state/nation to compete. We have a MAC (Midwest-Area-Conference) qualifying and championship team in football, soccer, volleyball, hockey and basketball. There are also club teams, just under the intramurals, that anyone can tryout for but don't compete in tournaments. There are a variety of martial arts/non-traditional sports (such as fencing) on campus as well.

  9. What are the academics like at your school?

BGSU is a huge school of education majors. We were founded as a teacher college, and we’re currently the largest teacher-producer in the state of Ohio. Some other popular majors: sports management, psychology, biology, business, and anything in the College of Arts and Sciences. The majority of BGSU students take academics seriously…but not too seriously. We know we’re coming here to get an education and prepare ourselves for the real world, but we want to have fun too. Students and professors interact a lot during class. On average, our professors are interesting people and conduct cool classes. Of course, there are some bad professors and some fantastic ones too. All our professors must have office hours each week, which means they have certain times they have to be available to help students. I feel bad for them because nobody ever goes to office hours until the week or so before exams.

  10. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

5 things you’ll most likely find a BGSU student doing during the week or on the weekend: 1) going to a home sporting event 2) partying/going to the bars downtown 3) participating in some sort of event for a student organization (like Dance Marathon) 4) going to Toledo 5) going to “the small” 1) Varsity sports on campus are fun to go to. If you’re a student at BGSU, you can swipe your ID and get into any home sporting event for free. That includes everything, even football, basketball, and hockey!!! Our best teams: football, women’s basketball, and women’s tennis. We play in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with schools like OU, Miami of Ohio, Kent State, Akron U, Toledo (our rival), Northern Illinois, and so on. One problem is that students tend to lack a lot of school spirit. Most of our students cheer for Ohio State and wear OSU clothes. The University is trying to change that, which I hope works. 2) Sometimes there just isn’t anything to do in BG. Partying is a big option. As a student, you know that drinking is going on. If you want to party, you can definitely get your fill. Lots of fraternities have parties but unless you're in the fraternity or a girl, you probably aren't welcome. Aside from that, there are tons of non-Greek parties. It's REALLY dumb to party on campus because it's so easy to get caught. Most students just go to houses and apartments off campus. At the same time, if you don’t want to party, it’s cool and no one will care too much. 3) There are a bunch of student organizations. We have a cool event called Campus Fest during the second week of school. During that, all of our 325+ student orgs set up a booth around the Student Union. You walk around, grab free stuff, and sign up for things you want to participate in. That’s how you find out about basically everything. Intramural and club sports are pretty big here. We have typical intramurals but we also have some unique ones like cornhole and water polo. We have a lot of club sports too, so if you want to be more competitive and travel some, try out for that. Our students are really into Dance Marathon. It take almost the entire academic year to plan. It takes place during the spring semester and is a 32-hour event that raises money for Mercy Children’s Hospital in Toledo. Other popular student organizations relate to Greek life. About 13{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our students are Greek. If you’re Greek, that’s cool and you’ll meet a lot of people. If you’re not Greek, you’re not going to feel left out and you’ll still meet a lot of people. 4) Toledo is only about 20 minutes away, so it’s quick to travel there. They have a huge mall, places to eat, and just a lot more than BG because Toledo is a lot bigger. 5) “The Small” is actually called Woodland Mall, and it’s located in BG. While there’s just about nothing in the mall, there is a movie theater that only charges $4.25 (even for brand new movies) and $2.25 for matinees. Anywhere else would be 10 bucks easy. That’s a fantastic deal.

The cost of textbooks but unfortunately I believe all schools have this issue.

  12. What is the stereotype of students at your school?

A stereotype I did not mention previously is the BG-STD stereotype. Many students here are perceived that way by outsiders. The university takes a very progressive view of sexual activity, and this stereotype seems to take it's base from that information.

  13. What is your overall opinion of this school?

To start off, if you’re looking at the size of our school, we like to say BGSU is “a large university with a small town feel”. While that sounds really corny, it’s also really accurate. During the school year, Bowling Green has about 30,000 people in the town. Once school is over and the students leave, about 12,000 remain. As you can see, not a lot of people live in Bowling Green. Our campus is big enough where you don’t know everyone but small enough where you can see people you know. Our campus doesn’t have the prettiest buildings, but that doesn’t seem to matter to students too much. We are currently constructing two new buildings on campus, though. One is for athletics (The Stroh Center) and one is for the arts (The Wolfe Center). The Union is the place to hang out before or after class. There are places to eat, the Bookstore, lounges to study, and a movie theater inside. Other than that, students go to the rec center or back to their residence halls. BGSU has a policy that students live on campus for their first two years. After those two years, most students move off campus because there are tons of houses and apartments off campus to live in. Living on campus is cool, but most students like the even greater freedom that off campus housing provides. One of the reasons I came here was because of the people. Everyone is normally super friendly. When you’re walking around, people tend to look at you, smile, and generally just acknowledge your presence in the world. The negative side about our students? It seems like EVERYONE smokes. While our Health Center says that’s not true, I might argue with them. You’re almost certain to get stuck walking behind someone who’s smoking. Either tons of people smoke on our campus, or they all just conveniently smoke near the doorways of every building. It’s not a huge problem, though, because it’s super windy here all the time, so the smoke just blows away.

  14. Why did you decide to go to this school?

I chose BGSU because I was looking to major in political science. They have an excellent program here, some of the students even got to comment on the 2008 presidential debate on national television. I am, thus far, happy with my choice.

  15. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The thing that I brag about the most to my friends when talking about my college is the low cost of tuition and the ability to get a degree from the college. For almost a quarter of the tuition costs of larger universities I am able to keep the cost of college down while also getting a more personal level of education and interaction from the teachers.

  16. Where is the best place to get work done on campus?

There are a few places you can get lots of homework done on campus. The top places are the 7th and 8th floor of our campus library. the 7th floor is group study, so talking is allowed. But the 8th floor is completely quiet study, and you won't be bothered there. There is also a study lounge in each residence hall, and it is an unspoken rule that the lounge stays almost completely quiet.

  17. What do students complain about most?

Most students are constantly complaining about the way this administration "nickel and dimes" all of the students. There's a lot of small fees here. If you lock yourself out of your room the 3rd time, $5. Lose your keys/Personal Entry Device combo? $40. Leave your room not quite as the university specifies for break? $25. Your ID card gets damaged? another $25. You don't need to bring quarters for the washing machines, but they charge you $40 a semester for using them. Printing in black and white is pretty cheap, but god forbid you want to print in color...19 cents a page. Other than the fees here, the university is pretty sweet. just bring an extra couple hundred bucks for things like this.

  18. What are your classes like?

Our classes are medium sized, but the professors are pretty sweet. Our classes are on average boring, but they manage to throw pretty fun ideas into the classes to make them more interesting. Our classes are frequently canceled, but usually not because of the weather. In fact, Bowling Green won't cancel your class for weather-related reasons until the weather is so bad you physically could not get to class if you tried. You can expect your class to be set up like your high school as far as desks go, but you can expect the lectures to be pretty interactive, though even that varies by professor. Most professors don't allow Facebook/twitter/StumbleUpon, but allow you to Google things and bring your laptops to class too.

  19. Tell us about the food and dining options.

The dining options here at BGSU are amazing, There are two AYCE (All-You-Can-Eat) dining centers on campus, one on the southeast, and one on the northwest side. basically, you swipe your card, and eat anything you want in the center. When you're finished, or you have class, you can then leave the center. There is also a lounge in one of the centers, and Wi-Fi access in both, so you can study and eat at the same time. There are 4 On-campus fast food places and a Jamba Juice in the middle of campus (The Falcon's Nest), which will be expanding next fall. The food in the AYCE centers is cooked by professional chefs, and although I wouldn't put it up to gourmet, it's not too bad overall. Off-campus, there is also a wide variety of options. Like Jimmy Johns and Subway? Got 'em. IHOP and Waffle House? Here as well. And Toledo, one of the restaurant capitals of America, is only 30 minutes away. From pizza to subs, Chinese food to groceries, off campus bowling green has enough restaurants to keep even a picky eater like myself quite happy.

  21. Describe the dorms.

The dorms or "residence halls", are pretty good. As with any college, the dorms cost more or just as much as an apartment, but you are required to live on campus for the first 2 years. The dorms vary in size depending on the price you pay for them. The current prices range from $2,335-$2,800 per semester for a double room and and $2,840-$3,300 for a single. There is a 2 movable desks, 2 bookshelves, 2 closets and storage cubbies (which are fairly large, almost 4ft deep) and a bunk bed in each room The bed can be de-bunked, raised and lowered. There is carpet in MOST, not all, dorm rooms. BG is really big on fire safety, you can't have personal heaters, heat lamps, stoves, pizza ovens, etc. in your room. If you have hair straighteners or hair dryers, use them in the restroom only. The fire alarms in the dorms are very sensitive. There is usually a pool table, air hockey table, and ping-pong in the lobby. You need to have a personal entry device (PED) to enter the residence part of every hall. your Resident Advisor will plan programs for the floor to participate in, and several times a semester local eateries will sample food in the lobbies.
