Big Bend Community College Top Questions

What should every freshman at Big Bend Community College know before they start?

Hannah

I would go back and tell high school Hannah not to worry so much. Many of the people you meet in high school will not affect your life now. Many people thought going to a community college was less of an education, and that I would miss out on the whole 'college experience'. I would tell myself that being financially stable is more important that going to a college based on popularity, and although attending Big Bend feels like the end of the world now, it's actually exactly what I needed. I found my dream job as an insurance agent and I met my best friend, because I stayed in Moses Lake. People who laughed and thought Big Bend was 'silly' are taking out loans to go to expensive colleges and I'll never have to worry about that. I would tell myself to take more chances, speak my opinion and accept help when it's offered. I would tell myself not to be scared to be unpopular, and take the nerdy classes if you want. Most importantly, I would tell myself so have more self-confidence, and that failing is a learning experience.

If i could go back in time and talk to myself when I was a senior in high school, I would tell myself to save up as much money I could, since college is really expensive. And to be wise about how to spend money when it comes down to buying things because that same money can be used for tuition and books. I would also tell myself to apply to as many scholarships as possible and to keep my head in those books and study really hard for upcoming tests and quizes. I would even tell myself to sign up for an AP class. Also, I would tell myself to join tennis agian, since I really enjoyed playing a sport in high school and that would lead me to more extracurricular activities and to make more friends. Also, I would try to do as many hours of community service because it helps the communtiy in so many ways. Helping others is the right path to go so if i tell myself that, I would become a better person.

If I could go back and tell my high school self some advice about adjusting to college, I think the most important thing I could say is relax. It's not as scary as everyone makes it out to be, and the experience will be different for everyone. You just have to relax and take it one class at a time. Also don't get overwhelmed by the workload, it may seem like a lot at first but it will all turn out okay. Yes you will have to change and learn how to study for these classes differently, but it's the same feeling as going from middle school to high school. While the environment changes, it's still just school. Just think of how many tests and assignments you have done in all your years in school. What's one more?

Don't give up, college isn't such a large step so no worrys. The transition into college is easier with the right people behind you to help. Talk to everyone and don't be so shy, it makes life more fullfiling when you make more friends.

First off I would say, it really does get better. You shouldn't wait that year and just go ahead and plunge into it, you are more than capable. I would tell myself to also not wait until after college to get a job, but start searching now. Learn how to study well and build relationships with the teachers, because they'll come in handy later. Learn to relax and make friends, give in to the college experience a little. Learn to use your money more wisely, because it runs out faster than you think and saving is going to help you avoid loans later. Don't take math lightly, study and do it right the first time. Set up a schedule where you get up early in the morning, it really helps in how much energy and focus you have. Last of all, never ever give up, no matter what happens. Life may throw rocks at you, but if you keep going you'll be able to find the light at the end of the tunnel one day.

Well, technically i am still a high school senior, so i really can't answer this question.

When I was a senior in high school I thought that I knew everything. I didn?t need anyone?s help with finances, school, etc. Now that I have been on my own, I realize that I couldn't have been more worng. If I could go back and give myself some advice, I would have three points. For starters, I would tell myself that I don?t know it all and I need to learn how to ask for help when I need it. Nobody is invincible and we all need assistance every now and then. I would also mention how important it is to not procrastinate. Whether it?s with school, scholarships, jobs, or relationships, it?s very important to be proactive in getting things done. Finally, I would stress the importance friends. I have learned that friends are vital when going to college because they are people who I can relate to, share with and know that they truly understand what is happening in my life. College is an experience that, if done correctly, can benefit me through my entire life. Lastly, I would say ?Andy, hang on and get ready for the ride of my life!!?

The greatest piece of advice I could give anyone who is starting or choosing to continue their education is to be aware that every decision you make, big or small, I will affect how easy or hard your college experience will be. After I graduated from High School I decided I wanted to get married and start a family. I had a daughter named Hailey who I love endlessly. Although Hailey is the biggest part of my life, I didn?t realize how much more difficult it would be to finish my educational goals. I have to work full time and carry a full time course schedule in school as well. In todays job market it is very difficult to earn enough to support a family and live comfortably without a college degree. I also feel it is important to set an example to our children about how important being educated is. So for everyone out there looking at going to school forget this: you will have time for everything! Time won?t run out! You can have your cake and eat it to, you just have to remember not to stuff yourself from the get go!
