What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I understand that you've been stressing out for the past years or so over where you will go after graduation, but just relax. The best advice I can give you is to visit three schools that interest you the most. However, don't just visit in the traditional sense. Imagine yourself to be a "weekend transfer student". Try to arrange a visit with the school administration for arriving on a Thursday afternoon and staying with someone who is majoring in what you plan to major in as well as is involved in the same activities you enjoy/plan to participate in. For example, if you play high school football and want to continue in college, but are planning on majoring in business, ask if the school can locate a football player who is majoring in business. Also, try to get a sophmore or freshman. This way, you can meet the student you'll be staying with and become familiar with the campus in the afternoon. The next day, shadow him/her around campus, go to all of their classes, take notes, etc. Then Friday and Saturday nights you can see the social side of the school.

Describe the students at your school.
My classmates were people that were equally as driven as myself: interested in the field that they were majoring in. This became interesting in that it affected how they viewed the field: from a more practical to medical to research based. This always lead to good discussion, and learning to see my field from other points of view, as well to help others expand upon their views. It helped all of my classmates, including myself, to grow in our education.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
Augie has a wonderful reputation in the Quad Cities and all over for that matter. I am so proud to go back to my hometown and tell people that I go to Augustana. I feel confident in my chances of getting a job after college because of the education I have received here. During homecoming this year, I talked to a few Augie alumni in my sorority, and they reassured me that they felt more prepared and educated for their job than their fellow co-workers.

What kind of person should attend this school?
I think as long as you have a passion to learn and get involved, this school is for you. The campus is smaller but that does not mean that people are not enthusiastic about the things they do. They love what they do and they take school seriously because ultimately that is why we are here.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
I have found that there is a severe lack of communication between students and college administration. To me, it seems that the college administration assumes that students will find out information on their own and because of this, the college administration does not share certain information with students and expects students to take responsibility for acquiring the information. I believe that just because students are expected to live up to their potential as adults, that does not mean that students should just "know" certain things. The college needs to take better responsibility for informing students when it is necessary.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
I consider coming to Augustana one of the best choices I have made in my life thus far! From the moment I set foot on campus, I felt like I was at home. For example, within two days of being on campus for freshmen orientation, I was invited over to my advisor's house for pizza and to hang out with a small group of my fellow first-year students. After planting my feet here, I have taken off running and never looked back. Now a junior, I am amazed at how much Augie has given me in three short years and how much I have personally accomplished in this short amount of time. The best thing about Augie is that I can be very involved in campus life and still do well academically. I will explain more about the academics and student body in the paragraphs below :)

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
A neat thing about Augustana is that there are so many groups for you to get involved in; the tricky part is narrowing down all the choices and deciding which ones you want to become a part of. Whether you are an athlete or in a sorority/fraternity (you can also do both!), everyone gets along. There are many different groups on campus but together we show pride in representing our school!

What are the academics like at your school?
I absolutely love the small class sizes at Augustana. Most of the classes I am in have about 20 students each. Professors know you by name... most will still call you by name when they see you walking around campus a term or two later! This personal connection with faculty is something I cherish and feel very lucky to have here at Augie. Whenever a problem arises, your professor is only a phone call or e-mail away.
Academics are very important here at Augie. I feel I have received a wonderful, well-rounded education. The liberal studies classes we take provide us with extra knowledge in addition to our core classes for our major. I also love that professors take the time to make sure that their course material connects with material learned in other classes.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
During my college search I definitely heard a few stereotypes about Augustana. The main one is that everyone at Augustana is a rich, preppy, white kid from the Chicago suburbs. (Not true)

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
Not entirely. While the majority of students are Caucasian and from the Chicago Suburbs, many are also from a variety of states and countries. There is a great appreciation for all sorts of different cultures on campus. There is also a massive effort underway to continue increasing the geographical and ethnic diversity of students at Augie. Also contrary to popular belief, not everyone at Augustana is wealthy. There are people from all sorts of different backgrounds including those who are financially secure to the not so well-off. There is no mold to fit when it comes to your financial position.
