What should every freshman at Appalachian Bible College know before they start?

Zachary

I would encourage myself to stay very focused and continue to go above & beyond. I believe what sets me apart & those who truely succed in college are the ones who go out and make it happen. My education isn't just going to fall in my lap, I have to put in the work and the drive to get the degree I need to thrive in my life. So I would tell myself to stay proactive and really grasp every once of knowledge and opportunity given to me in college. There is a difference between dreamers and people who actually go out and make their dreams happen. My transition from high school to college was just that; one who used to dream and now one who is in the process of living his dreams.

Knowing what I know now as a college student and being an adult. I would deffinatley tell myself as a high school senior to make a plan and be emothionally ready. Where as high school teenage in 2002 their was alot of the unknown walking out of high school on graduation. I would tell myself that I needed Alateen (a recovery group for an alcoholic home). I would explain to myself that life will throw you punches as an adult and as adult I needed to be ready for those unknown aspects of life. Going to college is an important part of life after high school and I would tell myself that to create dreams and goals it takes time and alot of energy to acquire a good working student to apply to the college life. College is a do it yourself atmosohere and there is not one going to achieve an academic goal other then myself. When leaving high school it is huge decision to make and going to college and not drop out would something else I would tell myself. I would mention that dreams and goals do come true with hard efforts and time. Everything is Possible.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I'd tell myself to get more involved. Everyone always told me you'll miss high school when it's gone but at the time I couldn't imagine ever missing high school. I moved around a lot so it was hard to get involved in things, but granted I didn't try as hard as I should have. So I would definitely tell myself to slow down and enjoy high school while it lasted because my parents were right, when I graduated I started to miss it. I'd also tell myself to be more outgoing and to try new things. I feel like my high school experience wasn't nearly as fun as a lot of my friends, simply because I chose not to go out or go to prom or go to a football game. I'd warn myself of the possible regret in the future for not cherishing the time like I should have.

I would tell myself to not hold anything back. Do not make the mistake of being reserved and unparticiapative during that first year or two. You miss out and regret it later. Take advantage of things such as student activites, running for class council, making friends that last a lifetime. I would tell myself to make full use of every opprotunity I had to make myself into a better person.

I would make sure that I was ready for a change, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I had a hard time with transition from going from a home to life all by myself. I wish I would have had the opportunity to get out a little more to see the difference in life at home and away from home.
