Starting college is a major step in any young adult’s life; you’ll be living on your own for the first time, leaving behind childhood friends and stepping out into the unknown. It can definitely be a stressful time, and if you don’t get a handle on the stress early, it could lead to some serious health and mental issues. Fortunately, we have some great tips on how students can reduce stress while at college.
Develop a Good Sleep Pattern
It’s essential that you get plenty of rest at college. There may be the occasional late-night study session, but don’t make this a habit. Be sure to set aside enough time to unwind and get some serious Z’s every night. Turn off all lights and electronics, including your cell phone. It’s also important to avoid caffeine and energy drinks before heading to bed. Your body and your mind need to relax so you can recharge and revitalize. You’ll be able to focus and think more clearly after a good night’s rest.
Eat Well
If your body is not getting a balanced diet, it will start to run down, which can lead to problems. It’s important to eat breakfast, as well as smaller meals throughout the day. Carry nuts, fruit and other healthy snacks in your backpack for a quick boost. Try to avoid eating too many sugary snacks and other empty calorie items. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
Exercise
One of the best ways to reduce stress at college is to work it off. Whether it is a brisk walk around the campus, lifting weights in the gym or swimming laps in the pool, get out of your dorm room and get your blood pumping. The exercise will not only benefit you physically, but will also help you clear your mind.
Zone Out
Rapid thoughts streaming through your brain constantly can lead to heightened stress levels. Reduce the clutter by finding a quiet spot to just chill. Try meditating, deep breathing exercises or take a warm bath. Give yourself a few minutes of down time and let your mind float away. You’ll find that you are more focused when you go back to the tasks at hand.
Organize It!
Clutter can lead to chaos, which, in turn, creates more stress. Keep a planner handy at all times. Place important dates and contact information in it. Create a system for taking notes and organizing important papers, too. When it comes time to prepare for an exam, you’ll have everything you need to succeed. By organizing your desk, room and life, you’ll spend less time trying to find things and will actually have more time to enjoy college.
Ask for Help
There are times in life when we all need a little help. Don’t wait until you feel completely overwhelmed at college to reach out. Talk to friends, family or even a school counselor about how you are feeling. You’ll find that by sharing your concerns and anxieties, you are not alone. Other people can provide other viewpoints and suggestions to help you cope with areas of stress in your life, as well. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when you need it.
Remember…everyone handles stress differently. It’s important to know how to reduce that stress before it becomes a problem for you at college. By utilizing some of these helpful suggestions, you’ll find college life more manageable and keep your stress levels to a minimum. Always strive to keep your life in balance, and you’ll leave college not only with a degree, but with your sanity, too!
