Nothing could be more thrilling than to wake up each day doing what you love. For musicians, it’s more than a career: it’s like breathing oxygen, and the need to create flows through our veins and gives us life. Unfortunately, college does not always afford us the opportunity to pursue our dreams for the sake of art; there’s almost always a price tag to be considered. So, before you get discouraged and resign yourself to becoming a ‘starving artist’ at college, check out these scholarship opportunities for music majors…you may find a way to keep your career dreams alive with scholarship funding!
Arts for Life! Scholarship: This scholarship program was developed by Florida’s former First Lady, Columba Bush. Applicants must be high school seniors residing in Florida to be eligible. They must also demonstrate artistic merit and academic excellence in dance, music, theatre or visual arts. A total of twenty-five (25) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. The application deadline is February 1, 2012.
Associated Male Choruses of America Music Scholarship: College students who are currently enrolled full-time at accredited U.S. institutions and are majoring in music may apply. Three (3) $1,000 and one (1) $1,200 scholarship will be awarded. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2012.
Visual and Performing Arts Achievement Award: The Golden Key International Honour Society will award nine (9) $1,000 scholarships to students who are members of the Society and have interests in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, computer-generated art/graphic design/illustration, mixed media, instrumental performance, vocal performance, or dance. Applicants must currently be enrolled in college to receive this undergraduate/graduate award. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.
As any music major can attest, following your dreams is not always easy; it takes work and dedication. But in the end, the effort can definitely be worth it.
