WARNING: My son was accepted to St. John's and spent his freshman year on Zoom due to Covid. He never got to campus. There is something that no one ever tells you about St. John's College. Unlike any other college/university in the USA, SJC does NOT allow students to repeat a course. If the course is too difficult (ex. Ancient Greek) and you don't pass the class the first time you are kicked out of the school and not invited back. That's right. You can pay for the entire school year's tuition and fees, study very hard, and then get kicked out and told you cannot come back the following year. My son worked extremely hard. He studied and attended classes 12+ hours/day. He did nothing but study and try to keep up with his classes. It was a very demanding academic program. It did not matter how hard he worked, he was not rewarded if he did not meet their expectations. Only natural-born talent is rewarded. This college does not reward hard work. No one is allowed to repeat a class. If you fail once you are kicked out of the college. End of story. Know this before you join SJC.

  4. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

There is usually not enough time to completely cover the topics and issues raised in class. The program moves quickly in order to cover such a wide range of material that there is no time dedicated to specialize in any one area, providing only a basic understanding of the most important aspects. In order to gain a better or deeper grasp on a topic of interest, it is necessary to spend your own time on it outside of class, which is limited.

  6. Describe the students at your school.

My classmates are the most unique individuals, each providing new and interesting perspectives in discussions and are valuable to the learning process because without them the knowledge attained in class is incomplete and one-sided, which, because of the nature of the St. John's program, does not provide an accurate understanding of the texts.

  7. What kind of person should attend this school?

A reader, someone with an open mind, not someone who bases their performance on grades or standards; someone who creates their own standards and sticks to them. Discipline, humor, creativity.

  10. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

No tests, and grades are de-emphasized. It's all about the education, and each individual is responsible for theirs. It's hard, but totally worth it. We read all of the Great Books, as well as four years of Math, Science, and Language. This is a school for the philosophically minded and self-driven.
