What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I really struggled in my first attempt at college immediately after high school. Even though I was successful academically in high school, I lacked confidence, responsibility, and maturity. I was very naive about the world and subsequently ended up making a lot of mistakes , both personally and academically. As an older student, I have learned a lot, and now understand what it takes to achieve my goals, but I wish it hadn't taken me so long to get to where I am. If I were to advise my younger self, I would probably begin with networking. I think it's important to start building a strong, positive network of peers at the college you plan to attend before you even get there. An effective support system is priceless. I would also insist that a younger me familiarize herself with all college resources, and understand the importance of assertiveness and self-advocacy. I had many experiences that would have been much different if I had only asked for help. Lastly, I would wisely advise a younger me to care more about herself and less about dating, and to get more involved in constructive campus activities and enriching opportunities..

My classmates are a group of diverse individuals, largely from New Mexico, who chose UNM for a variety of reasons that tend to be deeply personal and unrelated to how they fit into a group of stereotypes.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

A great education in a very culturally diverse atmosphere.

What kind of person should attend this school?

The student body is very diverse and tolerant. Students need to know how to ask for help and advocate for their needs. The campus is rather large, and it's easy to get lost. Learning how to navigate the campus and its resources is imperative. Safety can be an issue at times, so students need to be vigilant and aware of security resources.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

What's unique about your campus?

The life on campus. There are a lot of activites that are put on by the Resident Hall Associtation, so there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people. The students are also hard working. Many students will form study groups within their dorms and get together a couple times a week to study.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

Law and health sciences have strong reputations at UNM, and athletic events are also very important to students and community members.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Going to college is an overwhelming process. The one thing I wish I had known before entering UNM was how to navigate through the recources provided by UNM. I wish I had known how helpful the university website is, and how helpful the advisors are. I think knowing these things would have made my first semester much less stressful.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

We have a cool basketball arena and a Lobo is an awesome mascot. If you are willing to take initiative, the faculty will help you succeed. Also, NM resident tuition is so inexpensive, I feel like I'm practically getting a degree for free!

What kind of person should not attend this school?

If you are looking for a school in a big city or urban area, you would probably be disappointed with Albuquerque. Also, if large schools are overwelming to you, then this big public university of approx. 26,000 total (undergraduate and graduate) students is probably not for you.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The theatre program at this school is the best in the state. It is extremely well rounded. Even if a student comes to be an actor, the student is required to take classes in all other aspects of the theatre world. If the theatre program is run this way, I expect other departments to have the same approach to their subject.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about UNM is the academic advisors. A student can see the same advisor two days in a row, ask the same questions, but recieve two completely different answers. They are not knowlegable, nor helpful in any way. The advisors within the departments are a bit better, but the general advisors are close to useless. It is better use of a student's time to ask an upperclassman for help rather than an advisor.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Haha, stereotype . . . Every student brings something different, this university is very diverse.

What are the academics like at your school?

Academics are pretty good in my opinion. I keep hearing that the medical programs is what the university takes pride in. Lots of resources like tutors and teacher assistance available to students. Classroom settings 200+ are fair sized, giving more student-instructor interaction.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

My overall opinion of the University of New Mexico are that they have great educators and programs; however there is not enough communication between the president of the university and the students. I feel that we are disporportianatley represented on campus. School pride a very important thing to us on campus and I do not feel that the administration gets involved with us, but instead just tells us to be school spirited without doing it themselves.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Student government, ASUNM is pretty popular. For Latino and Chicano/a students, El Centro is the place to get resources on jobs and scholarships. African-American Student Services is a hub for Black students, American and international. There are some good Black frats and sororities as well. The Community Engagement Center partners with AmeriCorps and gets students work study jobs in community organizations and focus on racial and language equity issues (great program). Athletics is popular-not sure why though, they suck and the football team has issues with understanding what consensual sex is. Yet girls still hang out with them....??? Anyway... There are a lot of student organizations and those are easy to create. Another good resource is Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color (PNMGC) which provides mentoring opportuntiies to students. There is also a Dream Team to support undocumented students and other programs that address such issues.

Why did you decide to go to this school?

New Mexico is where I'm from and most my family is here so I didn't want to go far. I looked at both the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. UNM is located in Albuquerque while NMSU is in Las Cruces, which is further away. I liked everything I had heard about UNM, such as it being a large campus and having a duck pond. Overall, I'm glad I chose this school.

No, UNM is an academically challenging school.

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.

Sports are a big part of UNM, in particular the football team. Many people get angry with how much money is spent for sports alone when they could be paying for things needed on campus. Games are fun to go to though and home games are free for students.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

UNM is very diverse and that creates an abundance of different personalities. One typically knows who the jocks are because they usually dress in fitness clothes, but however this isn't the set stereotype of UNM becuase there isn't one.

UNM is one of the most university I have been at, I can say that this is the place for me. UNM has provided me plenty of opportunities to succeed and challenge myself. I am close to home, and have one of the best medical schools in the US, compare to other states. UNM has everything to offer me and a better start to succeed in my career.

I have attended a singular class, and I enjoyed every part of schooling life. I think it was such a beautiful campus, and nice people all around. The only thing is that it is expensive, more expensive than some other colleges around. But the feeling of this college is like no other. It is gorgeous scenery, great diversity, intelligent conversation, and almost anything you could ask for in a campus. I would recommend this college to any one as long as you have a scholarship.

the main campus is really good there is a lot of opportunities that are open for students to be able to show what they can do best and extracurricular within the school. the social life is also very good, you can be able to meet different people with different backgrounds and see who you match with.

The university is predominantly a fantastic medical school. While other degree tracks their math department has strict rules on no calculators through all of Calculus so prepare for this if you did not grow up in a region without this practice. Albuquerque has seen a surge in violence and homelessness, but being observant and traveling in groups will often see you where you need to be.
