I have spent a total of 2.5 years here to complete my undergraduate degree. I am happy I found a community that is supportive and understands the importance of inward work. I enjoyed all my time here as the town a magical little green gem tucked away in the cornfields. If you're looking to meditate and contemplate things in life you never felt like you had time to before- this is the place to go do the mental work!

I love love love the school. Love the teachers and the block system. The writing department and everyone in it is absolutely amazing. It definitely is a unique school, and it has its ups and downs. There is a definite 'new-agey', meditator vibe, which some people may not feel comfortable with. There also aren't all that many clubs/extracurricular activities -- but the ones we do have are excellent!

MUM is a pretty quaint place located in a somewhat quirky town. The campus is relatively safe and everyone is always blissful. In general, the professors are always there for you and want to see you grow. I wish the food on campus was better, though.

  2. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

This place is a mirror for your conscience. People who are conflicted within themselves either never find out about this place, or can't handle their true self and leave quickly. This place only retains the most open of minds. Don't come here with the egotistical attitude of changing the world, this is the place to lose your ego, find your true self, and change your OWN world. Love.

  3. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I were back in high school, and if I advice myself that, my first priority was to learn what the options were. You don't need to be in a rush to choose your life's work. What you need to do is discover what you like. You have to work on stuff you like if you want to be good at what you do.Being a doctor is not the way it's portrayed on TV. Fortunately you can also watch real doctors, by volunteering in hospitals. The world changes fast, and the rate at which it changes is itself speeding up. In such a world it's not a good idea to have fixed plans. Instead of working back from a goal, work forward from promising situations. This is what most successful people actually do anyway. From this moment, you decide where you want to be in twenty years, and then ask: what should I do now to get there? I propose instead that you don't commit to anything in the future, but just look at the options available now, and choose those that will give you the most promising range of options afterward.

  4. Describe the students at your school.

You would be hard pressed to find so many amazing people in one place. In life, you come across people every so often that shake up your life, values, and perception of humanity... Here at MUM, all those people are here.

  5. Describe your school to someone who's never heard of it.

I am applied for the STA world traveler internship which required me to make a video about myself and why they should pick me. I chose to make a travel-style video about Fairfield and Maharishi University, which I currently attend. I think it gives a nice little flavor.

  6. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

This is true with many of the people within the community... the people who have been here for 30 odd years. The student body itself is amazing. Full of wonderful, inspiring, action oriented, progressive, unique, intelligent, thoughtful, spiritual young adults. Some of the students here do still party, but a majority of the students have just grown past getting "wasted" and look for something more...

  7. What are the academics like at your school?

You get what you put into it here. If you are looking for a place where your education is entirely fed to you and your hand needs to be held for everything, then this isn't the place for you. There could be room for improvement here but it's up to you to make it. A recent example of this attitude happened in the sustainable living department. A few students felt the school wasn't really "walking their talk" when it came to the building infrastructure. Instead of leaving, they took things into their own hands. They wrote up a proposal to the school where they would take a semester off to work on putting in sky lights, re-wiring the class rooms to be more efficient, and some other structural ideas. This was passed and they received pay for doing this as well as valuable experience and credit.

  8. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

I am busy every single day, and I don't even have a job. Because of the diversity and uniqueness of the students, this small college town is ALWAYS full of life.

  10. What is your overall opinion of this school?

This place is filled with the kind of people who care about the world they live in on every level. Conscious students come here. If you are the kind of student who goes to parties and looks around at all the people getting drunk and partying while thinking to yourself that there has to be more to my college experience than this, then MUM is for you. Have you ever had one of those rare AMAZING conversations about life with one of your best friends who you have known for years? Here at MUM we have those types of conversation EVERYDAY. No one really watches TV, we are either out doing something (even in winter) or reading books. One of the more strange aspects of the place is that every student has seen "The Secret" and "What the Bleep Do We Know". This isn't a requirement for new student orientation. The strange thing is that most every student has already seen these two movies before they came and believe in their messages. Some how this place just attracts those types of people, which adds to the collective consciousness of the place. Also, every other person here is either an artist in some form or a musician. This keeps the place very unique and open to anything.

  11. What's unique about your campus?

If there is something you truly want to know, then you truly want to listen to your own wisdom. You know, meditation is learning how to listen with your own wisdom, so that you can see. I think why meditation is amazingly important, is that somehow our unconscious world is much bigger. It is huge, universal, and we don't understand that one. Meditation allows this world to be light and knowable, understandable. MUM, is the only University gives to explore our own wisdom through consciousness based education.

  13. What kind of person should not attend this school?

Any kind of person that beilieves that violence is the answer. Any kind of person that is like that will not have much fun here. We are all about loving each other unconditionally so it doesn't really matter who comes here because they will be loved. We are working on a restorative justice system here to use instead of a punitive justice system so we can formulate a community that function as a compassionate mother figure instead of the age old domineering structure. All are welcome, prepare for deep transformation upon arrival.
