It's a pretty good stepping stone for what it's worth, but administration is sometimes nonsensical, will make you wait forever and won't tell you what you're missing. Disability center is rather rude, and sometimes useless. Film program is also good, but the administrator seems to only care about the films the students make in HIS class and not anyone else's. Otherwise, it was fine.

Kaili - 07/18/2024

My name is Kaili Stafford. I am currently majoring in arts as an undergraduate at Santa Monica College, planning to transfer to UCLA and earn my Bachelors in Art. In the spring semester of 2024, I made the goal of becoming more involved in the community of my college by taking advantage of its abundance of resources. As part of my general education requirements, I needed to attend an English 1 class—the material requiring students to develop critical thinking and analysis skills as an aid in writing essays. I have always felt strong in my writing skills, but found I needed to efficiently adapt to college-level expectations of writing. I went to a writer’s tutoring center twice a week. The experience helped me develop more confidence in voicing my perspective, better handle constructive criticism, and overcome obstacles in my writing. It has taught me the importance of community and reaching out for help in the places it will readily be given. I’ve become a much more confident, driven, and disciplined person and student because of my school’s writing center. The writing center is a small, yet significant aspect in the grand scheme of resources my school offers to its students. Not only are resources easily accessible as they are often announced by staff members or professors through the school email or physical flyers, but they are genuinely helpful in career-building and networking. Santa Monica College gives me both the hope and the platform to pursue and accomplish my academic goals.

I really love Santa Monica College because it is a good school that can help us transfer to USC, UCLA , and other good colleges. They even have good places to eat and I really love my professors because they are very helpful. My school is fastest the best community school that I have went.

Santa Monica college has an excellent campus and very modern facilities. The overall environment is very superb for a community college. The class sizes are appropriate and not over-crowded. My professors at SMC have been very inspiring. The only thing I wish SMC could improve on is better school spirit and sense of student community. A lot of the students seem like they only attend classes for education, not to socialize or connect. Many of the students at SMC are adults and it feels less like a college than a community centre.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

IF i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would give myself great advice. I would mention that the efforts a student makes in high school does play a significant role in how they begin college and when they graduate. I would tell myself to not take education for granted because its the key to one's future. In college, students have to pay for thier books, their classes, fees, and even parking. I woudl tell myself that appreciating the courses in high school and learning the most from the subjects is the best initiative one could take. I would tell myself that having fun a good, but priorities should be recognized. Many teenagers really only think about the present and little about the future. This is normal because people are nto inclined to worry much about ten years from the present. However, I woudl tell myself that every choice one makes today dictates where they are going to be in the future. The entire college process involves sacrifices that are no where near comfortable. However, if students find their passion, then thier drive will fuel thier pain through the difficult journey.

  7. What kind of person should not attend this school?

I feel that Santa Monica College has a niche for people of all types of character. From my own experience, people from multiple backgrounds are respected as individuals both from faculty and students. If you are xenophobic, I suppose this wouldn't be the best environment. I find it extremely rewarding to be exposed to people from different walks of life to learn of their culture and experiences. As humans we don't live in a bubble. If you can't tolerate diversity in student life, you won't survive and succeed in the real world.

  8. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

My school is unique in many different ways. It is one of the largest community college and has the number one transfer to University of California, Los Angeles. It is a great campus of green and evidently a smoke-free campus. The classes are small and personal in which students are able to communicate with the instructor and other students. The professors are really helpful. They would stay after class to answer students' questions and even do study sessions when there is no class. They know what they are talking about and really inspire students to further their education.

  12. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I don't think there is anything that I had not known about the school before I arrived here except for the select few things that were pleasently suprising, like having free bus rides on Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus; that helped me out a lot considering I had no car. But there was nothing I wished I had known before. I made sure to be prepared for my arrival here and I am glad I took that precaution.
